Last online status removed for non-friends
Just noticed a few days ago after Steam went down that you can no longer see when a person was last online if they're not in your friend list. This does appear to be a universal change and affects everyone. Strange change...

Bad change, just because you're anti social doesn't mean we should lose out on knowing if someone is still active or not on Steam.

And why should you care about the last time an user was online?

Good change. People not in your friend list should not have to know this information.

RIP, Europeans of course go along with any form of censorship.

Interesting what you understand as a censorship... :lunar2019crylaughingpig:

Good change. It wasn't indicative of anything, anyway, thanks to "offline" and "appear offline" modes.

I hate this change. At least the excuse for all the people that say "Valve needs their resources for more important stuff" is gone. Now they can hopefully implement stuff people really ask for like being able to show a lower level badge once you max it out etc.

But people not being online doesn't show activity. I myself am very often in either Invisible or offline mode. I chat & play almost every day, but when one looks at my profile I haven't been online in more than a month now. I have people on my friends list that have a "last online" of more than a year ago, yet I know they're active.

I think every user should be able to choose whether they want people to know when they were last online or not. Like we do with friendlists and library.

You profile is private, it won't make any difference.

yeah, thats pretty stupid imo
what if i want to add someone as a friend but i want to know if they still use their account, or even if they are active they are active frequently enough that they will see my request?

It really never was relevant. Mainly because not signing into the friends list showed you offline, since that is what that status is updated by and that can be forever if a user wished.

????

Not everyone used appear offline modes and those who do rarely have them on for any more than a few days.

It doesnt hurt to know when someone was last online considering it would benefit people more than it hurts them, you could tell if the person you played a game with yesterday was online or not, you could tell if an old friend of yours is active or not so youd know weather to bother adding them in the first place etc.

People saying "Good Change" must be smoking something.

So overall this was a useless change, and its negatives outweigh the positives.
Choice is always good. Please understand - how you use Steam is not how others use it.

Auto sign in / always online is one of the modes. So if the person did not switch to it, the person preferred not to - some people want to just play at times, or upload mods or artwork, not socialise 24/7 or going through the hassle of matchmaking. Therefore, the option is welcomed.

It also serves your needs, come to think of it.
If your old friend is offline for a year (but could still be gaming daily), they dont want to talk to you or prefer to game with strangers.

Up to you to remove them if you want only friends who are available to chat/game when you are. Or just connect via chat with a "Hey, when are you next online for a game? Your status is always offline, so I can't see when you are available". Learn your friend's preference. For non-friends, you can always message or leave a comment on profile (depending on settings).

You talking to me?
Because if so Im pretty sure there isnt an option so your argument around "Choice" is false
