How do I remove the "news" timeline from my game library?
I find this feature particularly intrusive given it's foisted on me.

You can't, unfortunately.

Revert back to a previous client version. Only way to fix it, sadly.

My library doesn't have any news currently. You can configure the display to show only updates (and nothing else) and then downprioritize games.

The issue with this is, and, despite quoting your reply, I don't want you to feel I'm unloading on you for trying to help, but rather I'm hoping to raise the issue for discussion amongst the community in general, I'll have to do this for each game individually including all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ promotions and I cba faffing around with such a horrendous waste of time.

In short - ♥♥♥♥ this facebook timeline ♥♥♥♥ where Janice from marketing decides what I get to look at. - this is not how you go about facing down competing download services.

For starters, there's more than enough attention, you could join any of the couple existing threads. Second, you haven't grasped what I just posted. You can, as I said, have not display promotions at all. Finally, you may have to do it for each game, but only once.

... and in my case that's not a "may" - if I do it the way the app wants I have to do that for every item in my library and the promotions. I want an option to turn it all off once.

Again, I repeat, unless you were involved in designing this misfeature, I have no bone to pick with you.

As to joining other threads - there is the issue with Steam groups however that when those threads drop off the main page for a Steam group they tend to turn into conversations between active posters only who have become invested in their particular area in the thread. Like us here in this thread.

Thanks for this I'd looked about for ways to edit steam css and drawn a blank. I know from experiments with porting steam games that steam will run without gecko and by removing it you can force steam to simply list the games library after launch and was considering taking that route.

Not quite, if you hit the little gear at the top right of the "What's New" shelf, you can select it to only show game updates (not promotions or events), this settings is a global setting for all games. You will probably still see some news you don't like, but it will only show official update posts about games (as long as devs don't choose the wrong category).

It sounds like you don't want anything though, there is a way to make a skin that will remove the "What's New" shelf completely, check out that link posted above, it's pretty simple to do if you want it totally gone.

Do I need to tell you THRICE that promotions can be explicitly disabled? I told you twice and you still ignore it.

Thanks for this I'm just reading through the posts linked by Flava Clown...

I'm not ignoring your posts, rather the information you're posting isn't what I'm looking for.

I don't want to learn how to work with the UI update. I want to know how to remove it as evidenced by the first post

A couple of the other threads you refuse to check out got a workaround. The question is, how long it'll work though. And frankly, even why? The new UI update got blasted about as much as the new-before-it UI update which you now consider perfect. But which was hated just as much when it was new. A new-new UI update will arrive in a couple years as well and history will repeat itself.

My point is, you seem to do the same as almost everybody else, hating on the new for the sake of hating on the new.

I really hope making blind assumptions about people isn't a thing you do IRL.

As an adult I really resent being given the toddlers choice, where the debate is framed around "do you want option A or option B?" to sidestep talking about if I actually want or need A or B to begin with.

Each game I own has update and news postings associated with it already in my Library. If I want a new game I'll go to the Store. What I don't want is my Library becoming an extension of the Steam Store. I hate opt out marketing with a real passion.

You may not agree with or understand this veiwpoint, but unless you are involved with developing Steam UI I don't really think it reasonable to expect you to.

I think I've been fairly courteous to you so far while your tone increasingly less so. In short I'm not going down that path with you. Thank you for your contribution to the thread thus far.

Except you didn't have a choice of library when you got onto Steam. You had exactly one choice and you took it. Now you also have exactly one choice. The situation is the same, you merely regard it as different.

I'm now telling you for the fourth time that you can disable that, leaving only info about updates for games you alrady have on there.
