Steam chat not opening chat windows
Some really weird bug that I can't seem to find a fix for online. Most of the time, opening a chat window with a friend doesn't work and sometimes it does. There is almost no consistency. Chat works fine sometimes after restarting or I can open a window with some friends and not with others and then that too changes from time to time.

Only when I am in game and using the chat overlay I can open a chat with all my friends without any issues.

Anyone familiar with the problem? Thanks!

I'm having the same issue yesterday and today. Any luck figuring it out?

I can receive messages and the small preview window allows me to read some of it, and I can open the "Friends and Chat" window showing all my Steam friends, but when I double click on them, or right click and choose "Send Message" the chat window simply doesn't appear.

I fixed it by deleting everything from the steam folder except the steam.exe and the steamapps folders. Then I ran steam which reinstalled itself, fixing the issue.
Yes Im having this issue sometimes.

I was having the same issue and I think I´ve solved the problem by following the steps in this article:

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=2117-ilzv-2837

The part that says that to repair the steam service you must open an elevated command prompt and paste this line with the steam client closed:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\bin\SteamService.exe" /repair

Hope it remains good for me.

I had the same problem, opting into "beta" branch of steam fixed the issue, go to steam > settings > account > opt into beta.
I don't know why is it bugged in main branch of steam, can be related to GPU, I have RX 570.

This worked for me too. Really dumb how the chat became bugged for new installs if you didn't opt into the beta.
