help editing localconfig.vdf please
I'm struggling to get some changes I want made to stop being reset due to being re-pulled down from the cloud.

When I first got into steam I added a bunch of non steam games I had, played around with the configurator before I understood it, added new controllers etc.

I just started with a blank slate/new steam install and i noticed that my localconfig.vdf auto populates this section:

"controller_config"
{
"147330772"
{
"controller_steamcontroller_gordon"
{
"DEFAULT_FOR_TYPE"
{

with various shortcuts and the associated templates I had assigned to them. I dont want to lose the templates themselves as I put a great deal of time into creating them. I just want to remove their being assigned by default, which seems to be stored here.

every time i edit them out of the vdf, i connect the controller(s) back to steam and POOF theyre all pulled back down from the cloud.

Anyone able to help?

Is this for a specific game?

Post in that game's hub.

nah its for a whole plethora. Theres tons of entries under "Default_for_type" everything from numerical (that relate to an appID) and emulators like cemu.

Trying to remove them but theyre just re-downloaded/merged with the vdf every time i restart steam >.<

... Then stop the cloud from saving those things? Go offline?

tried that. disabled cloud. edited from vdf. re-enabled cloud. POOF back again.

even made the file read only for a bit. The minute I removed the read only attrib, poof merged back.

Will the games run with it read only?

Since I don't do edits like those, I am afraid I can't really help ya :/

I didnt get so far as trying the games. And its np, I appreciate the reply nonetheless.

I'm beginning to realize it will either take some heavy duty sorcery, or its simply a limitation of the way steam handles cloud stuff without giving the user any control.

Gotta take the bad with the good perhaps.

I usually just disable steam cloud outright. Having lost a number of hours in intense games because of cloud issues, I mistrust it enough to just say no.

yuck. I havent experienced that yet, but the fact you (and presumably others) have is scary business. I have several kids, any freetime I get is substantially more valuable than it used to be. To waste it would push me to do the exact same im sure.
