Telltale games got bankrupt, someone bought the licenses for the games and decided to sell some of those (especially those with licensed IPs like Walking Dead) exclusively on epic games.

To be precise, EPIC financed the development of the rest of the final season of Walking Dead so Skybound who now hold the license thanked them by making the series EPIC exclusive.
No big mystery there.

Also nobody "bought" the license, after Telltale was broke the rights did go back to Skybound Entertainment who hold all Walking Dead license rights, for the comics, the tv series and all game adaptations.
Skybound is owned by Robert Kirkman the creator of the Walking Dead comic and overall franchise.
