Why does Steam want my billing info when I'm trying to use wallet funds?
I have a decade old account, never any issues, much money spent. I added £50 to my wallet no issue. But when I got to use the money to buy something then i have to fill about 8 bits of info on billing info? But why? Never had to do it before

So in ten years of only ever using the account in one place they now want to know where I am even though they already know? Seems odd, I'll wait until the sale is over in case they are being over cautious due to fraud over the sale period.

This has been happening since about a week ago and today was extended to Germany it seems.
Its a bit odd since we pay all the same tax on purchases and its actually included in the store price we see by law.
In the USA it may make sense because each state has a different tax law.

Same problem here. I've never used Steam on another computer or in another city.
I'm not sure it's even legal. I have agreed for Steam to take money from my account to spend in an in game store. I have already proved to Both Steam and the money transfer company who I am and the money is mine. But now Steam wanting all the details they already have seems very iffy. It's like we are being set up for a fall, for instance. Most the Steam data base is secure, but with this new info having to be entered ends up getting stored elsewhere and low and behold suddenly a 'hack' happens and date gets stolen. I feel very uneasy about it all. Contacting bank to get advice on a company demanding personal details after they have already accepted money. If Steam were worried about who I am and my payment then they should have never accepted the money so easily.

More and more e-commerce is being taxed by ruling of the Supreme Court.

Steam asks you for billing address because of their policy under their terms and conditions. It's mandatory for any company complied by law depending upon the country to acquire the billing and shipping address of the consumer if the consumer purchases any goods and service from e-commerce sites. It was mainly initiated because of consumer and seller's protection and their rights. Steam maintain their full privacy policy. So don't worry about it. They do not sell or share any consumer information and this billing info is just for confirmation.

European Union law does not allow to collect unnecessary data. Country might be necessary. Not name, city, street and so on.

I've already wrote a complaint to "GDPR inspector" in my country. Sending it in the morning.

I will too. I have always payed price including tax from a certain country. Steam know this, they already have my payment details. I don't trust them suddenly asking for a duplicate of information that will be held elsewhere. Also under EU law I can request all info they have on me including customer service entries so might just request all that, just to see how much info they are keeping

They already have my country stored. They could just ask for the province/state or my postal code. They really do not need me to type my name, full address and phone number to do this.

Oh and since I requested that my billing info not be stored - this is not useful for them to compare...

I've been a customer for years and years, they have my e-mail address (periodically verified), my country and all my payments went through the same bank (in my country). There should be _no_ need for my full name and address, let alone phone number.
So, it might well be my last ever purchase was the one before the one I just stopped because of this excessive data harvesting…

Welp I won't buy anything until that nonsense is removed, maybe it's a good thing, I already have too many games to finish in a year.
Apparently it lets you just put the address of the payment vendor you use.

That's right, they need your info so they can steal the mona lisa and leave a card there with your billing info.

For registering and buying games in Europe ONLY the name is necessary. Everything else can be falsified. In short, you have the right to lie. It's law. Eulas cannot break laws.
