What was the error you were given when you entered the key for the SE?
i'm assuming you meant you couldn't redeem your free copy of Special Edition after buying your Legendary Skyrim at Walmart. On that assumption, just to let you know...
You could not get the Special Edition of Skyrim for free. Unless you owned Skyrim and ALL the DLC *before* the release date of the Special Edition.
If you got the Legendary Edition after Special Edition was already out and for sale.. or bought any missing DLC you didn't have after Special Edition was for sale.. then you did not qualify to get Special Edition for free.

And that says of 2016, it looks like. So nearly 2 years ago you had to own all the DLC. i mention this only in case 8ullfrog (or anyone else) says they bought the DLC last summer, or something, that woulds till be the summer of 2017 and still tooooo late to get the free Special Edition.
Thanks for looking up the actual annoucement tho. i was too lazy to >_<
That's when the SE was released, yes.
Edit: Yeah. Also had the link to it saved in a group I own. lol
Sorry editted my post to explain more when i responded as i did.
