Review comments default to disabled. Why?
Anyone else notice that steam has defaulted to making comments disabled in reviews? Any speculation on why outside of obvious trolling? It feels rather petty and pointless, a review should be informative but lately I've been seeing people writing bad reviews simply because they don't like small aspects about a game, the comments can be used as a discussion of the review or to clarify things to readers.

Is this some odd form of damage control in order to create a kind of safe space? This has been the new standard for a few months now but I'm just starting to notice games being flooded with recent reviews that say almost nothing about the core gameplay they are reviewing, and to top it all off the comments are disabled on every single one of them

This has been discussed several times. The search discussions feature is a wonderful thing.

You've seen uninformative reviews? Nooooo I don't believe you!

Steam also provides a box which you can tick if you find a review funny...(!)

Do you really take Valves opinions on the provision for reviews seriously to aid US the customers?

Can you not personaly discern between some bonehead giving a bad review by saying "I hate the game because I tripped over my cat" and a decent honest reasonable balanced review?

So you want to tell a reviewer what a bunt he is for saying something you disagree with? Do you think he will care less?

The review system is there to engage 'us' the plebs, into the world of steam. Thankfully some see past that and actually write decent reviews...

Who cares if people find a review 'funny' Not anyone who reads reviews and wishes to be informed... Only this set of Valve/Steam wasters... and the idiots who tick the box thinking they are oh so special. Are you getting this now?

It's a joke being abused by the ignorant and Steam damn well knows it, because they know 'people' will somehow take it seriously and draw you in by inches.... Congrats, you've just been had, again ;-)

People get their feelings hurt when people respond so it's likely less work if they leave it off and avoid all of the reports.

A "review" is nothing but a personal opinion, and as such, there is no reason to discuss it (If a user dislike a game, no matter for what reason, he is entitled to post that), if you disagree, make your own review and/or downvote the one you do not find helpful.

Here are two reviews from one of the most praised and appraised car racing games ever here on Steam:

"Terrible"

and..

"Not bad"

And people take this system seriously... :steamfacepalm:

Yeah right.

I like reviews, the more the merrier, and from more than one source. I'll never understand why people get upset about it. People would actually prefer that someone stand over the reviews as enforcer deeming which is appropriate.

To be fair, I take actual reviews seriously. I like to skim through the people giving their real opinions on a game before I decide it's worth giving the developer $40+ for a ♥♥♥♥-tier game that's still in early access.

If you want to waste a decent chunk of money on a game you're only gonna spend a couple hours playing that's your decision, just don't berate me for wanting to actually stay informed. You don't see me ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on your front lawn

Just because you have an alternative opinion you shouldn't assume others want the black and white opposite.

No one here has said anything at all about prefering a presiding enforcer. Read the individual posts before speculating.

I'm definitely not upset, just curious as to what made Steam make the decision to make comments default to disabled. If anything it'd probably make people that actually want to know if a game is worth buying to look elsewhere

Doh. Someone makes a thread and then complains that others dare to post their views within it which do not coincide... Typical steam discussion... :steamfacepalm:

Unsubbed...

Tfw you misconstrue curiosity for complaint.

You were also acting rather condescendingly towards me over an opinion. I didn't even bother to acknowledge your views on the matter simply because you chose to be an arsehole about it, go ahead and unsub lol your opinion doesn't matter to me with that kind of attitude

Oh no doubt Axe, but I've met plenty that actually do want that. Some of the devs from some games even start messing with reviews. I don't want a dystopian type of review is all. I'd rather it were anarchy.

I'm not trying to be combative here, if people come to this thread with the idea that you can talk down to me and assume I won't do the same back, you are dead wrong. I honestly don't care who is right or wrong with a topic like this because in the long run it really doesn't matter that much to me, I just want to see some dialogue about it.

I actually remember when the devs to Enforcer would ban people from their steam discussion pages and website for saying anything negative, even if it was constructive. Liked it back when everyone could say what they want and left it up for the reader to weave through it all

Yeah and i've yet to see someone who got banned from a game forum who's post history didn't show ample justification for the ban.

Look OP. Not everyone wants to be harassed by someone who wants to argue that their opinions of a personal experience are wrong. Just accept that.

I've seen good and bad reviews. I've seen people make posts in the forums I had to put on ignore. There are several reasons people don't want feedback for reviews. Posting an opinion shouldn't result in flame wars and trolling, but how many threads had to be locked because of stupid arguments.
