Steam and "Hentai-" games
Seems like nowadays there's almost always a game titled "Hentai" (with something before or after that word) in the New & Trending section in the store page.

Often they are just some silly short puzzle games that you have to complete to unlock an image of an anime girl in a provocative pose, sometimes desplaying nudity.

I don't have anything specifically against these games simply because they're not my cup of coffee, but what does begin to irritate me is the amount of these games popping up.
Even now as of the time of my typing this post there are two of these "Hentai-" titled games in the New & Trending section of the front page.

It's sad, really.
Just have some artistic skill to draw some hot anime babes, often poorly with bad anatomy, basic game coding knowledge, and then just keep pumping the same product into steam again and again, with slightly different anime babes each time.
Why this happens? Because it's easy and profitable in the same way that the "Elsa Spiderman" type of videos are on YouTube; kids consume that stuff like an addiction.

Let's all be honest here, Steam already has a fair share of poor games, do we also need these? You can find the same stuff as free flash games to play in your browser.

Time to check my New & Trending section too!

* The Conjuring House - Gore, Violent, Action, Indie
* Timespinner - Indie, Adventure, RPG, Action
* Creed: Rise to Glory - Action, Simulation, Sports, VR
* Pathfinder: Kingmaker - RPG, Fantasy, CRPG, Isometric
* Valkyria Chronicles 4 - Strategy, RPG, Anime, Turn-Based
* V-Rally 4 Day One Edition - Racing, Offroad, Simulation
* New Gundam Breaker - Action, Mechs, Anime
* CrossCode - Action RPG, RPG, Pixel Graphics, Female Protagoni
* Pummel Party - Indie, Action, Casual, Multiplayer
* Star Control: Origins - Adventure, Indie, Action Sci-fi

Ever since they got rid of the "New Releases [as in exactly the newest things that happen to have come out today no matter how unpopular/obscure/niche they are]" and replaced it with "New & Trending", I haven't seen any of this so-called "shovelware" on this section (including but not limited to Random Anime Girl Face #28716 Gracing A Game Cover), aside from maybe some odd-looking indie game cover such as Pummel Party here.
I'd just like to say that I actively go and buy such games, I'm happy that they have a place on Steam. If they weren't on Steam, Steam would lose potential revenue since I'd be going and buying games elsewhere and not on Steam while your purchasing habits would remain unchanged regardless of if the games were here or not.
Actually a bunch of games with Hentai as the first word in their name got removed from the store.

But animated games with topless teenage girls sell.

This post was about the excessive ammount of "Hentai-" games that have been popping up on Steam, not about how recomendations and tags work.
Because that's how the system makes all that 'swarm' of games from clogging your recommendations or the new releases tab.

Which robs these games the amount of visibility they got by swarming the new releases. Now the 'produce by the ton' strategy no longer serves to provide that visibility. Out of sight, out of mind, out of wallet.
I wonder why their positive reviews are so high. If that was a Hentai packed with action or horror together and a storline I can understand but these are nothing but rip off rubbish puzzles.

Only the people who buy a thing on Steam can get their rating into the Steam user rating nowadays.

So this must mean whoever buys the products in question that you see with a high rating apparently like what they paid for.

Of course, this may be modulated by the price; it's probably easier to satisfy someone who paid $0.49 for something than $4.99 or $49.99.

As mentioned before me; only those that buy the product can rate it.

And the people that buy these games are well aware of what they are: silly little puzzle game and pics of hot anime babes. If that's what they are looking for, that's what they get, and thus these people have nothing negative to say about the game.

I think you'd more likely go and play the free flash games on your browser. Free flash hentai-games have existed for a very long time, and there's a huge amount of them available to choose from. For free.

Also, I believe Steam is already losing a lot of revenue with people turning to competing platforms that are not infested with as much shovelware as Steam is.

The actual number state otherwise. See that's the problem with belief. The truth of the matter is. these games exist because bpeople be buying them. Those who want to buy them can buy them. Those who don't want to buy them, have other things they can buy instead.

Not everyone gets hung up on what they don't like. Most people jyust ignore it and move on to what they do like.

Yup, Steam has more users then ever and is still growing rapidly.

Did I say Steam is dying out?
No.
But there are customers that turn away from the platform towards competitors because of the aforementioned reason.
That is literally Steam losing customers, which means losing revenue.

Of course this one problem alone would not be able to significantly damage Steam, but one problem stacking on the other would, which is why Steam has to actively tackle issues that their customers have, which is why such issues must be brought to light.

Maybe I'm the only one that has an issue with this, maybe I'm not, but how would Steam know about it if nobody talked about it?

If anything, leaving Steam just because they sell something one doesn't like is a pretty stupid reason. I for one don't like Steam selling not just those puzzle games with suggestive pictures (I like suggestive/sexual content with context, not just as eye candy), but also because of many other forms of shovelware and bad quality meme games. Add the excessively violent games to that list as well. But I'm still there, because they also offer what I do like. Not my taste? I ignore it, after all, people have different appetites, preferences and taste. No need to judge. Pick what you like and move along.

The thing is, when they move to a competing platform, they don't move to one that doesn't sell the games that they don't like, but they move to one that does sell games that they do like.
Again, as it's obvious for everyone: Steam is the leading platform for selling games on PC, we all know that, but competitors do exist, and when the little things keep bothering for a long time, like a small splinter sticking on your thumb, it does drive some people away from this platform to another that does not have the same issue.
Small issues stacking up on eachother do drive away a bigger group of people, and I know I'm repeating myself here, but if Steam does not tackle issues on their platform, their competitors will slowly, but steadily, grow.
Do we have to wait until Steam considers one of these competitors as an actual threat to their platform until they decide to satisfy their customers?
Do we, the customers, have to wait until then to voice our concerns and issues?
Or should we quietly leave once we're fed up enough and move on to one of these competitors?

The key-word is variety. Steam currently offers the widest variety of games on the digital market. So they appeal to most player demographics on one end, but offer the biggest amount of content people could dislike as well. It's inevitable. You can't please everybody. So their aim is to please as many customers as possible by offering the largest possible variety of products. Just for the record, GoG has opened up their doors for Visual Novels, and of course, there are people who are displeased by that, some to the point of openly arguing against that step. But they also gained the favor of people who happen to like visual novels. It can't be a win/win situation for everybody.
I have to agree that leaving Steam because you don't like what they sell is a bit silly, GOG sells 'Porno' 'er Hunie Pop, and I'm not leaving Steam and GOG over that. I'm not out to have any games removed from Steam or GOG, but I reserve the right to make fun of games that exist only for boobs and such and gamers who boast about masturbating to games in reviews.

Visual Novels aren't always sex based 18+ patch games and people do even play some of those games without patches.

I like the Fault games, there is no sex, heck I don't remember romance or any erotica in either one.

They're on Steam AND GOG.

I'm not talking about actual games that are created for people to play and enjoy, I'm talking about shovelware, the "cheap to make easy to sell" crap.
And with that said...

... erotic visual novels are not what I'm talking about.

I have absolutely no problem with a game featuring nudity, or other content of sexual nature.
What I do have an issue with is having a typical flash game, and one with no efford put in to, being on the platform, and their selling point not being the gameplay, not being the plot, not being the experience, but instead just some anime tiddies.
These products just slipping into the platform again and again just to make an easy, lazy buck.

Mainly the games that have "Hentai-" in their title come to mind, but obviously not all of them do have that.
I'd again like to remind the comparison to the "Elsa spiderman" videos on Youtube.
