Download drop rate to Bits/s
Hello,

after I formated the ssd, I'm downloading the games I'd like to play again once more.
However, the download rate was at max. at the beginning but at the end, for 3 games droped the download rate to nearby KB/s or Bits/s.

It is shown, that 2 of those games are downloaded for e.g. 31,8 GB of 31,8 GB but still not finished. The third one has trouble to download 6 GB at a <50 KB/s rate.
For all of them it shows Months to progress.

Tried the normal "looking for solutions" search in the web but didn't got my problem of a download rate drop at the end of the downloads figured out.

Tested:
Broadband-with
other WLAN
If i made restrictions to steam download
Steam Server change
not playing
Firewall (but it was fine before)
Mal-, Spy-, etc. - Ware

Any other constructive suggestions?

Adding: sometimes there is another download called "steamworks common redistributables" which pops up to get downloaded. I allways put it at first place to download and its at normal rate but there ist still no progress for the other downloads.

Are you seeing disk usage in the graph? Steam may be unpacking the files.

0 bytes/ s... but after i've downloaded the steam common redistributables of appr. 450 MB, 2 of the games finished the download at < 50KB/s in the last 3h.
Waited for those 2 days now, as full downloadable content was already downloaded.
Now it's the 6 GB rest.

Standard is at MB/s, don't panic. If you are living in a bigger city, you didn't get a slower line, even if you would like.

I have exactly the same problem. First game (~15gb size) I downloaded got to 88%, then the download speed went down from max (3mb/s) to a few kb/s or less. And it never recovered.

Thought it will fix itself after a while and started downloading the next game (~60gb size). But after 80% the download speed again went down to kilobytes or even bytes per second.

Currently I download yet another game, let's see how that goes.

In any case, I tried switching servers, but that didn't work. It must be a problem on Steam's end since my connection is fine (and games start to download with full speed when the other, previous games are stuck, which makes no sense).

I'm located in Germany, so maybe there is a weird problem currently? Started yesterday evening. The day before I downloaded a game to the same computer without problems.

EDIT: Third game downloaded completely without problems. Weird.

EDIT2: The 60gb game now resumed download with max speed, but when it reached 93% the same s*** happened again, now it's currently at 40 bytes/s. I guess all I can do is wait and hope Steam will fix their crap eventually.

I have the same problem and I also come from germany. I had the problem since a few weeks on my old system. Today I have bought a new system and still I struggle with the same problem.

I had try every possible solution on my old system. On my new one also, besides changing the download region that I will might try later, if my current download get stuck again.

Would be nice then the steam devs finaly fix this issue^^.

Any of you, are you monitoring your disk usage? Most of the time Steam's content servers can max out tour connection no problem, but the client cannot take in that data if its receive buffer is full due to needing time to unpack game assets. Once disk usage levels off the client can once again start reading from the servers.

I don't have the numbers of my old system in my head, but my new system shows 1-5% usage by my hd. RAM and GPU 20% because I also running a browser besides steam with a youtube video. By all the frustration, the downloads make, I need some entertainment in the background^^.

Only the first game I downloaded on my new system has work as it should, the other ones have all problems.

Edit: And CPU and Network is currently by 3%.

Edit²: Halflife 2 has now completely downloaded like Skyrim before. Still Oblivion and Total War: Warhammer refuse to do the same. Its just weird imo.

looks like it's a problem of new computer system setup or else of shortage of particular needed apps like Java, flash player, directx or even a microsoft network update.

My downloads are finished in the meantime.
After that ~450MB update of " steam common redistributables" it wasn't downloaded fast, but finished finally.

@RoadRunner
Java isn't usually needed anymore as a systemwide installation; even Minecraft has it built-in these days.

Update: It works for now. Hopefully it stays this way for all the downloads I have ahead.

I have choose now the "South African - Johannesburg" server as download server. Hopefully that helps everyone with similar issuses.

Before, I had try several servers in germany, france and the usa. No server there had help me, but with the south african it runs fine for now.

Some of the cases or at least one from what i read, seems to imply that a game may be unpacking.

The prcoess will not consume much / any bandwith, and you will see disk usage.

Slow downloads on Steam can be caused by a swath of things.

For posterity...

In case any needs it.

Oh, just noticed OP has an SSD and that it was recently formatted, so if that isn't too full then drops in download speeds for writing should only be momentary.

Since the SSD was recently formatted, assuming OP has Windows 10, did they try running the "Optimize" cycle in Defragment and Optimize Drives to "TRIM" the unused space and thus return it to the SSD's free space pool?
