How long can a game be in "coming soon" state on steam?

Im curious of how long a game can be on steam but not avaliable for sale?

This does of course not mean, that a game needs to be published, once the date in question has arrived. Here's one, that is (was?) scheduled for mid 2016, with the developer having moved on to other projects and not working on it anymore.

P.S.: With publishing on Steam involving a fee, be it through Greenlight or Direct, I suppose, Valve will just keep these sites up indefinitely.
