VR isn't.
Sony have easily been the leader of getting VR into as many people's hands as possible. But even then, it's still not even remotely close to something like phones.
What sony did show however, is that people really do want to have a VR headset. Valve however, are catering to the tiniest percent of gamers with that price range. That's good, a bit like neogeo did back in the 90's. But it doesn't help the platform move forward whatsoever.
What they could have done, was offer a new affordable headset and that would get a wider audience. Then go ahead and roll out this bigger product 6 months later to a year.
So all the comments that talk about valve being a bit out of touch, are valid arguments.
Steam controllers didn't sell what they expected them to sell. Sold free in bundles later.
Steam link didn't sell what they expected them to sell. Sold free in bundles later.
Steam machines was a massive disaster.
Steam big picture mode was a wasted opportunity.
And their first game in 6 years was a massive failure.
Not trying to put them down. Steam is doing great. But when it comes to other things, Valve are a bit out of touch.
lol...mr trolly mctrollerson :) VR is not a fad. And there are some truly awesome games out right now that you can play. Yes, it has a higher entry bar than flat screens but I find the immersion incredible. Also...huge companies are starting to use VR for business...design (3d cad), tele-presence, tele-medicine, remotely operated devices...it's all in its infancy. I'm sure I'm just throwing bait to the troll.. :) Anyway. I'll be purchasing it...if I get cold feet, i'll just get the knuckles.
I dont think vr will be the next gaming cuz i still see people still love couch console and pc... and yes vr is not pretty common thing on 3rd world country so you know the rest
Oculus. Microsoft. Sony. Nintendo. Samsung. Apple. Even people kickstarting crap will deliver to Canada. But Valve for whatever reason cannot.
My thought on them on not being able to sell this to Canada yet is that they're probably still deciding on whatever or not to sell the index based on current currency exchange rates from USD to CDN or making all the bundle prices the same in USD to CDN price or just entirely coming up with a new pricing for the bundles not announced for the Canadian market yet. This is just my guess.
it'll be nice seeing the index full kit at $999 CDN if they go with the same USD to CAD price if that was the case.
We'll get there.
Anyone remembers when flat TVs were outrageously expensive?
Steam link evolved into an app, not much sense in continuing the hardware.
It 'transcended' hardware. Just like GPS devices turned into mobile apps/Google Maps.
I'm really picky in regards getting motion sickness in games and had no issues using the HTC Vive, which was a pleasant surprise.
But in this regard mileage may vary. Since the factors that affect any individual are not the same ones.
It's not a technology issue as much as it's a personal one. There's so much you can do through software and hardware to avoid people who get motion sickness from getting it while playing your games or using your hardware.
I mean, cars do get motion sick too, don't they?
I'm way more looking forward to VR business solutions than for gaming ones. The device (and the actual tech being at a place to make the device operate correctly) is a tool that can change a lot of ways someone interacts with software.
Think of the difference between drawing on a screen using your mouse or doing it through an INTUOS tablet. That's the kind of interface difference VR can bring to many software solutions.
However, this is .. valvesteam.. n stuff....
When is the 80% pricedrop gonna be? Cuz .. I need that drop dear steam.
The hype isn't enough to make a new market.
Expensive television sets already had a goal when they hit the market, VR doesn't have enough of a goal in order to justify games having a demand for it. The games just aren't there or at least games with the feature. Valve is trying to build a market around VR rather than having VR be built around the gaming market demands.
Agreed
Prices for VR will drop, the killer app it needs to breakthrough will emerge and as the current crop of VR games age, you won't need expensive hardware to play the older stuff.
As it is, the index will probably remain a niche product but I can see the knuckle controllers becoming the gold standard across the whole market.
In my opinion guys, just buy Valve Knuckles if you have Vive or other hardware compatible and get over with it, if you have a lot of money, fine, go and buy the whole Index Bundle.
