VR is a fad and those headsets will be useless because they'll be nothing decent to play on them.

Love all the people complaining about the price. If this is too much for you wait and buy used, no one is forcing you to buy new. Also most new phones costs more.

Also if you buy the bundle it costs $999 (plus shipping I assume)
If you buy the headset and controllers then sensors separately it costs $898 (plus shipping which might be combined or might be 2 shipping costs).

If you sell your current headset that's another $150-400 discount.

There is no reason why you can't pick up the Valve Index around next Feb/Mar for $200-400 after previously said discounts since people will sell gifted Index's after not liking them or getting bored with them.
Big difference between vr tech and mobile devices. Phones are literally, in everyones hands.
VR isn't.
Sony have easily been the leader of getting VR into as many people's hands as possible. But even then, it's still not even remotely close to something like phones.
What sony did show however, is that people really do want to have a VR headset. Valve however, are catering to the tiniest percent of gamers with that price range. That's good, a bit like neogeo did back in the 90's. But it doesn't help the platform move forward whatsoever.
What they could have done, was offer a new affordable headset and that would get a wider audience. Then go ahead and roll out this bigger product 6 months later to a year.

So all the comments that talk about valve being a bit out of touch, are valid arguments.

Steam controllers didn't sell what they expected them to sell. Sold free in bundles later.
Steam link didn't sell what they expected them to sell. Sold free in bundles later.
Steam machines was a massive disaster.
Steam big picture mode was a wasted opportunity.
And their first game in 6 years was a massive failure.

Not trying to put them down. Steam is doing great. But when it comes to other things, Valve are a bit out of touch.

lol...mr trolly mctrollerson :) VR is not a fad. And there are some truly awesome games out right now that you can play. Yes, it has a higher entry bar than flat screens but I find the immersion incredible. Also...huge companies are starting to use VR for business...design (3d cad), tele-presence, tele-medicine, remotely operated devices...it's all in its infancy. I'm sure I'm just throwing bait to the troll.. :) Anyway. I'll be purchasing it...if I get cold feet, i'll just get the knuckles.
Have to say not impressed Valve....They going to sell to the EU but F off Canada? We are just here a little north of the USA and we can't buy the damned thing? Yet they will ship over across the effing ocean to EU....
personally i dont like VR that much... i dont mind about the price because its still a "thing" they were trying push to make gamer use it... but i already tried playstation vr and i really doesnt like it... my oppinion actually direct to health issue... playing game on tv or monitor is bad if you see it too close with your eye and now... its vr its front of your eyes ?? nope....
I dont think vr will be the next gaming cuz i still see people still love couch console and pc... and yes vr is not pretty common thing on 3rd world country so you know the rest

Enjoy your cancer and damaged eyes from literally having a monitor strapped to your face.

This. Every single other company will ship their hardware to Canada no problem.
Oculus. Microsoft. Sony. Nintendo. Samsung. Apple. Even people kickstarting crap will deliver to Canada. But Valve for whatever reason cannot.

My thought on them on not being able to sell this to Canada yet is that they're probably still deciding on whatever or not to sell the index based on current currency exchange rates from USD to CDN or making all the bundle prices the same in USD to CDN price or just entirely coming up with a new pricing for the bundles not announced for the Canadian market yet. This is just my guess.

it'll be nice seeing the index full kit at $999 CDN if they go with the same USD to CAD price if that was the case.

They are going in the wrong direction to gain better market penetration. They should be concentrating more on how to get VR into more people's hands.
I doubt they're focusing on any kind of market penetration right now.

Pick only one.
We'll get there.
Anyone remembers when flat TVs were outrageously expensive?

Looking at how Steam link went i would not bother.
Steam link evolved into an app, not much sense in continuing the hardware.
It 'transcended' hardware. Just like GPS devices turned into mobile apps/Google Maps.

But some have more issues with motion sickness then others though.
I'm really picky in regards getting motion sickness in games and had no issues using the HTC Vive, which was a pleasant surprise.

But in this regard mileage may vary. Since the factors that affect any individual are not the same ones.

It's not a technology issue as much as it's a personal one. There's so much you can do through software and hardware to avoid people who get motion sickness from getting it while playing your games or using your hardware.
I mean, cars do get motion sick too, don't they?

I'm way more looking forward to VR business solutions than for gaming ones. The device (and the actual tech being at a place to make the device operate correctly) is a tool that can change a lot of ways someone interacts with software.

Think of the difference between drawing on a screen using your mouse or doing it through an INTUOS tablet. That's the kind of interface difference VR can bring to many software solutions.
VavleSteam is smoking crack coke dope and doobies all at the same time if they think we'll pay this much.
However, this is .. valvesteam.. n stuff....
When is the 80% pricedrop gonna be? Cuz .. I need that drop dear steam.
Actually this is great, like if the military actually bought these for advanced training, it would be profitable or something, but there really isn't games that support this enough. If games like Rust made it a feature, then it would be great since it would be nice to be about to look around naturally, but I don't think they have it even, so it's cool, but I'm like what am I going to use this for?

The hype isn't enough to make a new market.

Expensive television sets already had a goal when they hit the market, VR doesn't have enough of a goal in order to justify games having a demand for it. The games just aren't there or at least games with the feature. Valve is trying to build a market around VR rather than having VR be built around the gaming market demands.

Look at Occulus, they are bringing out the Occulus Quest which is $400, is stand alone as in doesn't need a PC to run it and it will play the popular games like Beat Saber and many others. That is something that makes it more affordable to get VR into more hands. That is what Valve should be going for, that is what is going to make VR more popular.

Agreed

Really? FullHD TVs preceded HD channels and bluray by several years. The current 4K TVs aren't exactly swimming in content either. And Samsung(?) just debuted a $70,000 8K TV, where's the content for that?

Prices for VR will drop, the killer app it needs to breakthrough will emerge and as the current crop of VR games age, you won't need expensive hardware to play the older stuff.

As it is, the index will probably remain a niche product but I can see the knuckle controllers becoming the gold standard across the whole market.

With this price i don't think they are interested in "save the VR market" as some people told they would
In my opinion guys, just buy Valve Knuckles if you have Vive or other hardware compatible and get over with it, if you have a lot of money, fine, go and buy the whole Index Bundle.

Give me HL3 with VR features and I'll buy it.
