They are facing huge competition and they release an insanely overpriced VR set.
Stuff like this is why it's hard to justify Steam taking 30%, they just waste all that money on gadgets nobody wants.
Steam is a brand that was made off of sales, it's like walmart selling a ferrari.
Also if you buy the bundle it costs $999 (plus shipping I assume)
If you buy the headset and controllers then sensors separately it costs $898 (plus shipping which might be combined or might be 2 shipping costs).
If you sell your current headset that's another $150-400 discount.
There is no reason why you can't pick up the Valve Index around next Feb/Mar for $200-400 after previously said discounts since people will sell gifted Index's after not liking them or getting bored with them.
what huge competition ? if you mean gog , they are competition but honestly not huge
A 1:1 Oculus RIFT copy
No more ski poles as a controller. The NO GO (no feeling) in VR.
And oh wonder. Integrated headphones. Well :)
Compassion for those users who previously believed in HTC VIVE (+ Deluxe for Headphones). Knuckles are incompatible to old Version.
A paid for my phone 160 EUR, without a contract. The Valve Index set costs 1080 EUR. You can buy 6-7 phones with that amount of money.
But I can understand Valve. If they try it with cheap VR headsets, the user experience will be horrible and VR will fail. So they try to set some high standards.
I've tried Google glasses. Games are garbage, controls are limited. No thanks.
When you've been the leader in the digital market for so long you forget what put you there or what stopped competitors from getting to you.
Valve were lucky to be both one of the first companies to invest heavily in a digital store and have all your competitors be really inept or niche.
Same fate like the Steam Link, controller...etc.
Also unless they create themselves and/or try to promote more and better VR titles ASAP, then it is tooo late at this point to profit from VR devices...especially at that price.
Steam hardware has always failed and so will this, it is funny how a company like this does not have a team with brains to see that.
Money isn't an issue for Valve and with VR they just wanted to support it. It's VR after all and they wanted it to happen.
They didn't support it thinking they'd make mad cash out of it.
Then why the 999$ price tag? They could have made this much more mainstream and accessible for people with a 300$ tag then (that being less then the VR device WMR made by one of the richest companies on earth ...for the same reason).
But if you buy the VR + controller kit (799€) with the base stations (159€) it's 958€
And if you buy everything seperated (VR 539€, controller 299€, stations 159€) it cost 997€
I think Valve got their math f* up or am i missing something?
Edit: Who of the moderators added my discusion to ask why the math don't count up (now i know why, right before a moderator put me in this discusion) in a discusion where they are complaning about the high prices?
The a la carts base station is only for 1
Add another 160 Euros to your price
They didn't plan on making mad cash but they still need to get some return. Also believe the VR is mostly handled by HTC company. If they sold at a massive loss it'd just be bad business.
People would probably buy it but not be able to run it if it was priced low.
If you want a mainstream one you can get one for console. Valves VR or it's HTCs VR is of high quality and offer better experience while costing more.
... there you go.
Edit: Satoru you damn Ninja :P
