I want to install Skyrim SE to a different location other than the windows (x86) and the ordinary program folders
Hi everyone! :)
Can anyone help please
I'm trying to install to a partition that is on the same computer as my OS (windows 10 64 bit) but I keep getting the message.....Failed to create folder, drive is read only.
I have given FULL Permission rights to the volume E:\ but it hasn't worked! :(
I've been trying for a couple of days now.
Any ideas please

Kill Steam. Dont deinstall it. There is no options to turn off Steam you must kill it.

Open your file browser.
Create one folder called games or what ever.
Mark Steam, Cut.
Navigate to the new folder you did make.
Paste.
Go to that folder, start Steam by double click Steam.exe and it should reinstall it self on the same place you have pasted it.
Make sure that the dialog says the correct path.
You will have need to login again and check your games.

And you absolute need to revert the permissions changes you have done.

Did you make a SteamLibrary for the new partition/folder location?

Hi Brockenstein!
Thanks for replying so quickly :)
Yes I did. SteamLibrary
but no steamapps and no common folder.
Is this correct or wrong? The first time I tried I did have all of those folders, but still didn't work

is steam running with admin permission?
NoneOfTheAbove2 Apr 28, 2019 @ 2:02pm
I haven't given Full admin to C:\ I was a bit scared of the warning. Straight after I went into check the E:\ to check the permissions had been updated it said "Recycle Bin corrupted"
Before making the partition I manually searched and deleted all files and associated files to Skyrim and Skyrim SE. I also ran chkdsk in full search and repair mode to give it the best possible chance.

OK everyone it looks like the problem is now resolved, it has now accepted the E:\ and is allocating disk space.
Many thanks to Brockenstein and cheshirm! :)

Why dont you move Steam out of default location?
Easy to do and you dont need to mess whit permissions.
More or less Cut and Paste.

Changing permission on your drive is one terrible thing to do.

Here are Steam's directions for how to move your Steam installation and games. Just remember, if you are using any mod managers, tools, or shortcuts, make sure they recognize the new paths/game locations.

edit. you don't need a new partition for this. A folder outside of x86 will work.

Thanks Uncle64 and mikk011! :)
I couldn't find any directions on how to move the Steam program files and was worried that I would kill the Steam client as well. I had just spent over 20 hours trying to get it all working and ended up having to chkdsk /r which took about 9-10 hours by itself.
So if I change all the permissions back to default it should all work ok for modding then?

mikk01 Thanks for that link. I also spoke with Steam Support, but they didn't give me these options, nor that link. :(
Thanks for your time! :)

OK Uncle I'll change them all back once the download has finished.
Thanks very much for your time and advice! :)

No problem. I have run in to the issue my self for one long time ago.
If you have several of disks/partions you can do the same thing.

My self have Steam on my F: drive. On one Hybrid drive. Not as fast as my SSD.
You can easy move any game from outside Steam to. If I should have all my games in my Steam folder I should have need for one 3TB drive only for the game.
Some people are so dumb it's unreal.

Yeah modding can take up a lot of space! and slow things down a bit, so I made a partition for the Skyrim SE game program files where I shall also be installing MO2. Another partition for all the mods and the Steam client will run from C:\
So hopefully now with the clean install onto the clean drives it shouldn't create extra problems for me.
