Great game and the story is pretty good, but the gameplay is epic. I would rate this game 8.5/10.
Good gameplay and enemies and music and visuals and character selections, my only problem is that the story is ok.
But that's debatable.
I definitely recommend this game as it is one of the best games in 2019.
Getting good at the game takes some practice but even for people that don't want the hardcore experience you can enjoy the characters and combos in a lower difficulty and have just as much fun (without the frustration of not being good enough, and there is even an option to make combos easier to do).
And if you are one of those that want to be among the best, doing all of the crazy comboing and perfect clears on highest difficulty, the controls are responsive and the enemies challenging enough to make it worth your time as well.
The main reason to not get the game would be if you don't like mostly linear levels and "arena" fights, because most of the game is that, you won't have to be on the lookout for enemies hiden in a crack that would backstab you or anything like that.
There is also mostly no multiplayer (there are a few levels where you will meet other players but they are very few and far between, and you won't be able to do real co-op or pvp here).
Also, don't expect a serious story, you are kind of saving the world but they will still be making fun of bosses (especially Dante, it's his trademark at this point along with getting impractical but cool weapons from bosses).
If you are not sure, you can always go for the definitive edition of DMC 4, it features 2 of the 3 characters with similar play styles and it is very cheap right now (10€ on discount).
DMC 5 obviously has new things in it to make it worth playing but the base gameplay and controls are very similar so it's a good and cheap way to have an answer.
Since I have a horrendous habit of getting games and not playing them, and have been eyeballing DMC so I don't have to dig out my PS2 that's currently in another city, should I just leave the past to the past and pick this up instead? I never actually finished game 1 (I let it sit too long and my skills shrank) but I liked the game, and the trailer from here looks more or less similar, with the heavy battle soundtrack and appropriately ridiculous weapon stunts.
