Isn't there supposed to be a gif limit for store pages?
I heard somewhere that Valve was supposed to be instituting a limit to the page sizes of store pages. I found another steam store page, that has about 43MB of GIFs on it, 3MB of images, with a total page size of about 50MB (49.9MB).

This should be unacceptable. Images don't take a huge amount of data, but most store page owners now, are using Gifs which are just videos converted to Gif. Its ridiculously inefficient.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1167910/Space_Engineers__Decorative_Pack_2/

Thats the page I'm using as an example. If I were home and I loaded this page, I would have been unable to load it, it would have ended up half failed images and it'd cache the failed images to always be failed till I Ctrl F5 and restart again.

Now, I'm fighting for this, because it store owners should be considering everyone, not just those on fiber super net. I mean in this day and age everyone just assumes fast high speed unlimited data net is everywhere and slow net doesn't exist. Every single time I post that I don't have it, people laugh at me and say "get better internet". I'm sorry, but thats not always an option

Its different for everyone, but my particular case is that there is a monopoly in this area where 3 companies banded together to buy out all the rights to the area and pay other companies to stay out of the area, so like AT&T can't set up out here to provide anyone with internet. The only options for me are $40/m dialup, $40/m fake highspeed DSL, $120/m data limited satellite with very high latency, or my phone's 4G LTE forwarded via PDANet which is faster than all 3 options with no data limit but still not as good as any dedicated high speed service. Thats my story though and I would appreciate it if people would be more considerate of others in the future.

Valve, an easy fix to the exploit that some devs are using on their store pages, is to re-encode all uploads when they are uploaded. Don't let game developers send you a gif file renamed to jpg. Take the file they give you, read its file name, re-encode it as a jpg, strip its meta data, strip its gif data. This will void any possible exploitation of the file systems.

Another method you can do, is to check the file size of all uploaded images onto a page. If the developer wants to embed anything, he must upload it to your site first, and upon upload it detects that it is a 5MB gif file, limit the contents of the page to 20MB max. That will allow for 50+ images, and very little in gifs.

Another thing you can do, start allowing HTML5 Canvas and other methods to put certain web videos into pages, far far greater efficiency than gif files that can loop and act like a gif with higher qualities and faster load times.

Please, don't sit there and ignore those of us you consider to be minority and pointless. Put an end to massive size store pages. Good lord its even starting to happen in steam news, where a game is advertised to me at $60 and I have to load a 15MB gif file to see what the fking game is! If it fails, I can't refresh, because steam client doesn't have that capability. So I can never see what product was advertised.

If a dev goes beyond that, report it through the report function on the store page.

Hah, its 15MB. I tried the report function on the page, but there's nothing that lets me report the page for a gif size violation. All the report functions are for more serious offenses.

Valve should really be automating this sort of thing so that store page devs can't go beyond it no matter how much they try.
Closest option is fine.

I'd rather steam devs just add a "report page for gif violation" that way we can more quickly get it to the right department.

Funny enough, I searched discussions to see how many other people complained about gifs in pages, and I'm apparently the only person who's ever done so. All the topics are mine.
I've posted my annoyance in almost every thread about GIFs in the store.

If you don't report it, no one looks into it.

TBH they should support Webm format as they're better than gifs, not only they can be smaller file size, and longer video feed, but also can have better quality.
Absolutely, and there are quite a few limits. Some developers have been having discussions recently on the dev forums about ways to circumvent the limits though :-\ This kind of irritates me, but ... some developers are always going to be working around stuff rather than playing by the rules.

Few will complain about this issue because few understand it. The userbase is not subject to these same limitations and thus their crazy idea of gif movies rather than YouTube embedded video causes problems on low-spec systems.

This is KSH you are dealing with after all; they are not the brightest tool in the shed (including when it comes to the existence of that specific DLC product). Even the base game uses tons of computer resources.

That said, I'm not sure what to do outside of using the report button.
