Offline mode not offline
Why does Steam send network traffic to Valve/Akamai in "Offline" mode?

I'm having the same issue with Origin and don't like when companies change the meanings of software terminology. When my internet was down for several days, I wanted to play so bad. I thought offline meant I could play offline, but it doesn't. When I purchased a game's DVD, I owned the game and it wasn't in any way a multiplayer game. Then this nonsense started, the same game I could start w/o this stuff, I could no longer play my single-player game (including all the expansions) without the internet ... which sucked. I was a software developer for many years, and this is as bad as the media calling the design-flaw Y2K a "bug" when it wasn't a bug. It was merely an oversight by original computer engineers and needed to be patched all over the world.

At any rate, offline should mean offline ... not 'offline' according to what WE say is offline. If you have to login to go offline, then that's just some strange version of being online. If certain pieces were cached, then I could actually play the game from where I left it ... without the internet at all. Then when I'm able to reconnect to the internet, the cache would be updated. Turns out, I couldn't play my Steam-purchased game while my stupid cable service provider decided not to work on the weekend to fix anything. That's when I decided to stop buying gaming licenses that are solely dependent on technology. Almost as bad as having your electricity off, and for anybody who has ever had that happen, we know what we're talking about! Whoever said to go with the flow as times change, doesn't know what it was like when people didn't 'need' the internet, let alone to play a game with 0 intention of doing so with other people. To hell with piracy, and they couldn't be saving that much $$$$$ to make everything hang off Steam, GOG, Origin, etc.

Seems like a control-freak sort of corporate decision, not an actual piracy concern. Hackers can hack anything if they want to. Therefore, I'm with you on this, Kick!

Probably because your machine isn't actually offline, so it can still reach the internet?
Kick May 30, 2019 @ 5:51pm
It can, but why would it in "offline mode"?

Bump - offline mode needs to be offline, or it may as well be called spyware.

Offline mode works offline, that's all it is supposed to mean.

I don't want that. That's why I selected OFFLINE mode - so my bandwidth isn't wasted on pointless stuff.

so go offline when you want to be offline. steam won't contact anybody if you aren't connected to anybody. There's dozens of other programs doing the same thing for just as little reason as long as you are connected to the internet. Unless you've blocked them all one by one with a firewall, in which case you can easily do the same with steam.

Why does it have to be one or the other? What if I just want to enjoy my games while also chatting to a friend, on a limited bandwidth connection which I don't want to waste on unknown and probably pointless data which Steam decides to send in the background? Who cares if other programs do it, why does that make it right? I wouldn't complain, but it's literally called OFFLINE MODE which implies it's ... you guessed it - offline.

No need to get emotional and call people names. Simply read the thread post by post carefully. I can summarize if you are finding reading difficult: I'm a limited bandwidth connection and want to play Steam OFFLINE (meaning, it doesn't use my precious bandwidth) while also using chat, email programs, etc. It would be nice if OFFLINE mode was truly offline, i.e. not sending unwanted Internet traffic. Okay?
