Store's stance on abandonware?
While we got some rare cases of games being accused as abandonware, I think it'd be worth wondering as to what is Valve's stance on Steam Store games becoming abandonware.

To further clarify as to what i mean, I can recall two cases of two games having their PC versions abandoned in favour of console support: Mortal Kombat X and Jamestown, though both games ended up getting updates to bring them in line with the console releases (although it took a very long time and some angry customers)

Its nonsense posts like this why actual people don't take people who say 'abandonware' seriously.
Crazy Tiger 1 ago. 2019 às 11:54
Yep. This goes on par with people complaining that an EA game is dead even though it got an update a month ago.

People claiming that a game is 'abandoned' =/= the game being abandoned in any way.

Developer still doing business? *check*
Game coming out on any format? *check*
Trademark still in effect? *check*

Not an abandoned product in any way, kid. Just because you chose a pc version over a console version (of games which iirc are basically console-centric already? and would likely suck on pc for that reason?) doesn't make the game abandonware in any way shape or form.

Store's stance on abandonware?
Quite simple: abandonware is not a legal concept, thus can't be used in legal proceedings or defense, so Valve/Steam won't touch it with a ten-foot pole regardless of the definition you subscribe to.

As long as the game has someone who owns the license rights to it, its NOT abandonware.
That's every game in the world. Until the rights holder releases it for free, you're not supposed to download or distribute it.

Europe did it, cause of a gambling rule for minors. Steam followed no more loot boxes. Steam is not above the law. If they provide a game, which you bought here. And the DEV abandons it. Then in most EU countries, if it's within 2 years. Then steam needs to pay up. And get their cash from the DEV.

Europe has done nothing in regards to lootboxes. The Netherlands and Belgium have, the UK has deemed them ok. Other countries are on the fence.

Just like abandonware has no legal status in the EU.

It also doesn't matter whether a dev abandons a game. A long as there is a rightholder that the money can be sent to, it's ok. Games that aren't allowed to be sold anymore, due to licenses and such, simply get removed from the store.

Yes it does, if you buy something. And it gets broken cause there ain't any updates anymore. That's 1, now 2. If you buy something it's yours, offcourse you can't change it. But the DEV needs to keep it running. For my country that's atleast 2 years. The law in Europe is a tricky spiderweb. Which you need to know. Cause of all these royals houses. And ancient agreements, which still rule. Those are called loopholes.

You'll have to show me the exact laws that say that then.

Steam doesn't have room for that on their servers. And i don't have the time. But the law is like windows 10, at the core it's still DOS. DOS is the groundlaw, the constitution, Windows 10 is build like a shell around it. Reason why it gets bigger and bigger. They build around it, where apple starts over from the core. You start from within, like in a maze. Hit a wall, go back. Find another route.

No there is no law saying games have to keep working for two years and even if there was that does not mean games have to keep being updated and worked on so it still wouldn't cover the games op is trying to claim are abandoned.

Or simply put, there are no laws like that. Gotcha.

Example, fallout 3. Bethesda nolonger updates it. But now microsoft needs to do it, themselfs. Why, the game was bought for the x-box. Hence, it is a bad idea for steam to come up with their own console.

no Microsoft does not need to update fallout 3 and it has not been updated for years.

Again, any source on this? You seem to have time to post, then you also have time to link a source for these claims.

Well i got myself a game ready player, 3 months ago. From microsoft, to play the game on win 10. The same update you get, on the x-box. Next to that, i live in the Netherlands. We got gambling laws, so no loot boxes anymore. Good thing btw, kids get addicted for nothing. Then there is the law, what you buy is yours. And everything that has to do with electronics, has a 2 year garantee.
