Going F2P would make more sense for L4D1 as that would showcase the franchise getting playrs to buy L4D2.

Eh, you can play with Bots in CS IE "single player". The problem with L4D2 going F2P, is that it's not focused around loot drops like say TF2 and CS. Both games which are F2P but generate tons and tons of revenue. If Valve had any interest or thought there was any value in bringing that sort of scheme to L4D2, I figure they would have done it by now.
