Badge Spam Feels Bad
So, am I alone here, or does spending 4k worth of points from the event (from doing barely anything all event) on 40+ badge-levels feel rather hollow? I almost doubled my steam level, but I feel worse now than I did before the event. Before, I felt like my badge collection/steam level had some merit of effort behind it (trading a few cards here or there, and putting in hours into games from humble bundle, just to grab some card fodder). Now, it feels like this event has robbed me of that small amount of pride. At the same time, I couldn't simply walk away from those points; they're free steam levels. I know the event was broken in far greater ways, but I think that this is a pretty broad-reaching one. At the same time, I do feel somewhat bad complaining about this, since it's much like a child complaining that they were handed too much candy. I don't know what exactly Valve should do to fix this mess... I just thought I'd reach out for your folks' opinions.

Is there anything you think Valve can reasonable do to accommodate this aspect of the event's failure?

I only upgraded my badge up 10 levels, but I dont feel the same way, in a sense, its a part of your accounts history and fits in well with your golden 7 year badge. People only joining steam now will never have this oppotunity.
yeah same. I've only used it to get maybe 10 levels but yeah...the whole thing feels bad. even being on the winning team (corgi) feels like a hollow victory.
The badge and cards were always a joke....
(digital pictures should never be worth more than 99 cents)

i'm sure you could get a bigger sense of "accomplishment" dealing with cards in real life if that's your thing......

yeah I guess we can look back and laugh at how it was valve's worst sale, and say, "man what were they thinking".
I disagree.
Steam level does not show our seniority in first place, because exp that we get from seniority (years of service, games owned, community badge, event badges) is too low compared to exp from card badges. Those card were just from market, we do not put hours ingame to get them. We don't even play them at all. In my opinion, exp from event badges still worth more than exp from cards.

I think maybe that is a nice way to look at it. (Presuming, of course, valve doesn't repeat this event again.)
Srsly, like anyone cares about some steam lvl and badge.

I mean, for some that may be the case; but at least in my own experience, I've only on very rare occasions made purchases/sales on the market for cards. That may come from my IRL card-collecting for games like MTG. Sure, I could just order all the cards I want and build a deck for $40, but I find a lot of the fun in making friends, and trading the cards in my own collection. Also, I don't think steam levels really ever represent seniority; It's always been a case that those with the most money have had the highest steam levels. But, at least in personal terms, steam levels do give a sense of progression, even if it's largely a false one.
I personally choose to have a gigantic badge (I mean high exp one) rather than lots of small badges. That way, my real-badges won't drown too deep.

That is a good spirit.

So 4k points which is about $1.33, if you consider 15k points is $5.00. This is assuming that points you spend on badges is not claimable for the $5 rewards.

Found a game for $0.59, that has 10 cards to complete the set, each card averages $0.04. Complete 5 sets and you get 500xp. That's $2.59/500xp =
$0.01 per 2xp

You went up 20 levels, so from lvl 20-40, that's about 7k xp. Given the cost of 2xp per penny, that's about $35 of cheap cards and about 14 games designed to rank you up. Games that you'd never play. Games that'd take up space in your Library. Games that you can't gift away.

You spent $1.33 instead of $35.

Overally, I wouldn't feel guilty. I say you won the game.
