Buying Steam(Digital) Gift Cards-no points???
So only buying games add points to max points? Or do i need to wait until its redeemed?

As far as I can tell it's just games.

If you bought it on your account and your max points total didn't increase - that's your answer. We know games and CSGO keys should increase it, but market items don't.

(Obviously, just having the card gifted to you definitely won't do anything.)

I would imagine it's the same as topping up the Steam wallet i.e. you don't get points for doing such, but do if you actually spend the funds. In the case of gift cards I would imagine the person who actually spends the gifted funds would receive the points while the gifter would not receive anything. Just an assumption on my part though as I've only added wallet funds, not sent/received gift cards.

Ok it make some sense, i didnt think about Gift(money) swaping between users. Just description on GP page is bit misleading(Additionally, for every 1€ you spend on Steam, you will increase your maximum points). I sent gift card to friend trough Steam and he not redeemed yet. I ask later did he get points :) Not big deal but points would be nice bonus :D

That is very misleading they say for every 1€ spend you get 131 point but if you spend for gift card you get 0 points.

Not misleading at all, read the full bit

100 points for every $1.00 you spend.
Buy any game, DLC, hardware, application, soundtrack, or in-game item, and get points.
Gift card is not a game, DLC, hardware, application, soundtrack, or in-game item

When you use the gift card to buy one of those items you will get the points.

You didn't spend the money to purchase the gift card. The person who purchased the gift card and sent it to you was the one who spent the money.

I purchased the gift card I spend the money buying the dumb gift cards! And I didn't get any points!
Why the hell you are telling me who spend the money and who did not when you have no idea??

That doesn't fall in the definition of "spend" the person who receive the gift card haven't spend anything, the person who buy the card spend the $$. Steam can make clear description it is not that hard

Seemed pretty clear to me. Gift Card was not listed among the items for which you get points.

It is clear, it doesn't say you get points for buying a gift card...

U get points when u buy any game
. I personally don’t get what the Problem is here. Just load ur wallet up with a digital gift card then buy games with ur wallet and u will get the points.

i get what OP is saying.

i admit *i* was surprised the first time i bought a $50 digital gift card and *i* didn't get any Point Shop points.. but the person i *gifted* the digital card to got Point Shop points when they used the money to buy games.

It seemed odd to me.. because *i* spent the actual real money. i gave steam money from my bank account. The person who "received the gift" from me didn't spend *any* money.. yet they got the points.

But anyway.. apparently it works that way for a reason, tho i'm not super sure why.

So now i just gift friends actual *games* vs buy them digital gift cards.. because if i buy them a *game* i get the Point Shop points (which seems fair because i'm the one giving Valve the real money).. not the friend who only received a gift.

Anyway,.. OP, you should try that. Send your friends actual games... not the digital gift cards.

EDIT: Guess OP is super old, so i guess my words go to bashbahur instead.

I made first post 2019 so yeah its old :) and i need to clarify little bit.
I asked about Steam Grand Prix 2019(this was event during Summer Sale) points.
This time there wasnt specified you need to buy game, DLC etc, only spend 1$ to get 131 points.

Im not sure these were/are same Steam Points as we have now. Steam Points Shop was opened 2020(Summer Sale), maybe 2019 points carried over but i dont remember.

It’s complicated.

But yeah, this is why people shouldn’t necro very old threads. I was super confused by my own reply until I saw the date.
