Unicorn Hunting
Once again, I'm looking for unicorns... games that are VERY cheap AND surprisingly good, hiding in the masses of specials. I'm disabled, on a fixed income, and have a budget of, basically, pocket change. The two good times to land something are now and the holiday sale. We're here now... does anybody have any exceptional suggestions for sub-$5 games? The cheaper, the better.

I'm prone to RPG elements, maybe ARPGs, crafting elements, retrogaming, adventuring and exploring... basically, games where the character develops somehow (levels, abilities, items, whatever). I have motor control issues, so extremely challenging action is out (I can't handle post-game Hollow Knight, although I love the game... they never gave it difficulty settings for casuals to enjoy).

Fave games are generally Darksiders games, Terraria (best unicorn ever... I even made a small mod with chin chillas, petrifying acorns, and some other stuff), Hollow Knight (I LOVE the ambiance and disjointed lore), Reventure (SO FUNNY), Borderlands games (SP PVE), older Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games, Castlevania: SOTN, old Metroid games (so old metroidvanias, generally), stuff like that.

I always loved stuff like Portal 2 or L4D, both very good and under 1€. Also things like Orcs Must Die or >Trine sagas are cheap and, for me, they were true unicorns, very good and also very cheap. Finally, I love the Incredible adventures of Van Helsing if you are into ARPGs.

If you like chill puzzle games for low monies, look at the games that Frozenbyte makes. Trine (1-3) and Shadwen offer an interesting playstyle that you dont get a lot of. Another fun puzzle game is Mask of the ninja (Mark of the ninja?)

All of these will give you much more than 1hour/$ of playtime, which is the minimum value I look for.
Games under 5$ that I find good/fun, the list is maybe not 100% considered for your needs but most of them will be.

The list is will be listed with Euro, 1 dollar = 0.88 euro so 4.40 euros is 5 dollars.

Papers, Please 4,49€
Besiege 3,99€
Golf With Your Friends 3,89€
Don't starve 2,04€
Dishonored 3,29€
Bastion 3,12€
Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons 2,99€ ( need controller for this game but it's really good )
Doki dokim Literature club Free ( alright story for a Visual novel and it's free )
Fallout: New Vegas 3,29€ ( the must play game if you have not )
Psychonauts 1,49€
Revenge of the Titans 4,24€
Shadowrun Returns 3,74€
Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut 3,74€
Undertale 3,99€ ( it's a real feel good game )
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut 2,99€
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided 4,49€
DARK SOULS™: REMASTERED 3,99€ ( it's dirt cheap right now but maybe not a game for you? it's kinda hard but can be easy depending on what build you play with )
Fallout: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game 3,29€
Fallout 2: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game 3,29€

Have not played but it's cheap and good rating:
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition 2,99€
LiEat 1,49€
Primordia 2,99€

Edit: will add more games if I find more good deal.

If you like puzzle games you should check out zachtronics games... most of them are cheap and you can easily spend hundreds of hours...

You say to love metroidvania but also have motor control problems, whereas I've always thought of metroidvania as needing pretty fine inputs especially in boss fights so I'm a little confused as to what you are trying to avoid precisely.
I'll tentatively recommend Ys Chronicles. Unlike later games in the franchise, you just walk into things to attack, ideally at an angle where they don't hit you back, and press a button for using magic. It's not button mashy if that's what you can't handle, as long as your left thumb is functional it is fine.

I play more casual metroidvanias, like SOTN. I highlighted that I can't handle post-game Hollow Knight. There's a massive leap in difficulty there.

I can't handle the fight against the HK, itself, unless I get enough upgrades to basically facetank its first phases, and anything harder than that is just no. SOTN, though, you can just outlevel stuff; I'm not averse to grinding. I play to experience the content, not to overcome extreme challenges for bragging rights. (Props to those that do.)

I like to explore, to find neat stuff, and to develop my character, but I just can't manage demanding, high-precision, high-stakes action. This is why I just don't play street fighters, or competitive or team games in general, PVP stuff, or even stuff like hard custom Mario levels. My hands shake and don't always respond quickly; it's just not going to happen.

Thanks for the suggestion, though! I'd looked at that before, but now I'm thinking about it again. :steamhappy:
