You can search by name, but depending the name, may encounter small number to an high amount into thousands.

Friend code just make it simple to add the person.

Another way is simply just sharing profile address link.

You can still use the old system. And yeah, that friend code system reminds me of that male cow excrement Nintendo did with the Wii.

It didn't always work. That said, if you like name searching, why don't you simply keep on doing so instead of using friend codes you don't want?

it's easier if you know the person and can talk to them. The issue with the name search is that it has ZERO options on it. Why not add options to exclude people who haven't logged in in x days, or restrict by country stated on profile or add a "like", "includes", "not like" options to help reduce the number of results. If i search for a name for someone i think is on steam and active, why would i even want to see names that haven't logged in for 4000 days.

Any VISIBLE entrance to the old name searching system remains?

1. It was impossible to find anyone with short/common names, since the list would just include everyone with the search term.
2. It wouldn't account for recent name changes properly. I think it also didn't include recently created user accounts?

As a result, people were going "hey, post on the forum, then I'll find you that way".

Name searching was not perfect, but it was better than no name searching at all.

In some games you can identify players only by their names to find them by the name search after.
As they have hidden the page to do it, much more players than now will do that on the forum.

I think people tend not to actually understand that a lot of people dont use steam and that adding a friend with zero context is like black magic and mega intuitive

Also remember that

1) most people dont have a personalized url
2) if you're in the steam client you have no way to find your own profile URL to send to someone

The way the workflow works makes much more sense to new users. They want to add a user, they click 'add user' in the 'friends' category, which makes sense. then they're prsented with a number they can give to others or add a number from another user.

This functionally is literlaly no difference than sending someone your Steam64 id of numbers anyway.

and you can still search by name if you want, but note that searching by name was fairly terrible to begin with, and unless your name is mega ultra esoteric, searching almost always was futile.

And you know most of you were actually just finding a person's profile and clicking "add user" anyway

:conwayshrug: Either the last two options are better than searching by name anyways, because takes out the guess work. If we had filter for names, may still end up with some people either way in the search results depending on the name. This friend code works pretty well on Nintendo service, so why not friend code, just share the numbers, and done no name search needed.

It's interesting that you mentioned this, because I am starting to wonder if the new system makes it harder for people to friend other people out-of-the-blue, while making it easier for people to allow someone else to friend them (by them offering their own friend code).

It is possible, but it requires turning on "show URL" and then navigating to one's profile page.

They added the search back to the Add a Friend page.
