Downgrading a game

I'm trying to downgrade Terraria so I can play with friends on pc while they play on mobile. Here is the Reddit post

I do what it says, I go in the console and tell download depot to instal the number. It installs it, and then updates Teraria to the most recent update.

Any idea why it's doing this and if there is a solution, i would like to know

When you download and install the earlier version, do not put it in the same directory your most recent version is in. Any version running in your Steam/SteamApps/common/Terraria directory will be automatically updated to the current version. Make a desktop shortcut of the earlier version on your desktop so that you can access it there.
