Download speed

So I've recently moved to a new apartment and I got me a new internet plan.
I live in Sweden and I got a Fiber connected Telia 500 mbps download speed and 100 mbps upload speed.
I've connected the router to the jack on the wall and connected my PC through the router with a CAT 5e Ethernet cable.
I go on google and open speedtest to see my download speed and upload speed and I get the following:
Average 96 Mbps download speed and around 95 Mbps upload speed.
Now the upload speed seems about right however why is the download speed around 100 when I have a plan of 500?
Not only that, but when I download a game on steam it goes up to 11.9 MB/s and a tiny bit more than that, it's really confusing.

I will call the provider tomorrow and check if there's anything wrong with the connection but I would also like to read some thoughts from people who have had the same issue.

If there's a simple trick to solve this problem please let me know.

Speedtests and your ISP use megaBITS per second
Steam (and most other online games and services) use megaBYTES

8bits = 1byte

11.9 megaBYTES download from Steam equals 95.2 megaBITS from a speed test.

If you would like Steam to use megaBITS too like your ISP and Speedtest, then go to the top where it says Steam - View - Friends - Games - Help

Pick Steam> Settings> Downloads>
Then find "Display download rates in bits per second"
Put a checkmark there.
Then click "OK"

As for why your ISP is giving you a slower download speed than you're paying for, that's a different issue that you should call your ISP about.. then you and them can sort things.

Is your connection to your router actually gigabit ethernet? Or just fast ethernet? Cat 5 cables aren't exactly state of the art. If there is somewhere damage it could degrade. Does your router support gigabit ethernet? Does your PC?

Thanks for the answer, alright so about the bytes and bits i get it now. I will check tomorrow with the provider why it's only 100 and not 500 though.

Ok, but more importantly check what speed your ethernet adapter reports to be sure. I have a good router, an excellent mainboard and had a better cable. Still all I was getting was 100Mbps. Because the cable was damaged and I hadn't noticed.

Is it on the Task Manager?

Just one more question, what about the Wi-Fi download speed? I know it won't be as fast as the Ethernet cable but shouldn't it at least be over 100?

If you are on Windows 10 simply type ethernet settings in the start menu, go to adapter options, right click on your active ethernet adapter and check status.

Wi-Fi can be a lot faster than 100Mbps. Though less stable. My current one is at 700 on my LAN if I recall. As long as your Wi-Fi adapter supports one of the newer protocols and your router is set to work with that also. From the pdf you linked above your router seems to be supporting even faster speeds than mine.

Even faster way to find your ethernet adapter, type on start network connections. You will also see you Wi-Fi adapter there and see the speed its clocking on the LAN also if it is active.

sorry for such a late reply, but do you remember if it showed it being capped at 100mbps? I have a similar sounding issue (i have a cat 5e cable, good router/powerline adapter, 1gbit connector on motherboard etc)
mine is showing 100/100 cap in settings, so was just wondering
