Steam Overlay, and Lost mouse and keyboard input in game

I get a pop up from steam, so I open overlay to try to make it go away. Than go figure Even without overlay opening I lose ability for mouse input and keyboard in game.
I can alt tab and control everything but the Steam game.
You think turning off overlay will fix all issues?
