Asset-Flipping: Do you have all the facts?
no one cares about the assets they orly care about the game play

Yeah... same way you don't care about the bricks in the wall. As long as the wall is sturdy and strong, the bricks are fine.

exactly! I WANT developers buying assets from the asset store and using them in their game. I dont want them re-creating what is already created.

And to be clear the worst offender of so called 'asset flips' could argueably be Call of Duty

Nope. You want asset flips. Check COnsole games. Megaman was particularly atrocious about this. Ad let's not forget Doom Doom 2 was literally just a level pack.

well first off I dont see that as a problem, second off because of the massive amount of trolls around this topic any game that has a toilet from another game is going to be accused of 'asset flipping'.

case in point, blackspawn has a link that take him to a group that has on its first example of consumer injustice is one game that uses a gas mask in its logo. claiming that gas mask is form another game. the only thing that is the same about the two examples is the gas mask itself, being ltierally...a gas mask.

Buying assets from the Unity Store to use in your game is not asset flipping.

An asset flip is when a "developer" buys an already completed game from the Unity Store, then tries to sell it on Steam without making any changes other than changing the title.

Back when I was trolling Greenlight, I've seen "games" try to get on Steam using the exact same trailer as the original Unity Store page. Trailers that I am already intimately familiar with because I've seen them dozens of times already when everybody else tries to put the exact same game up on Steam.

here is what most of your buddies will do

critic: 'asset fliping is not buying an asset from the store and using it, its when a developer buys a feature that is nearly a competeld game and adding nothign else to it'

me: 'can I see an example'

critic: 'sure, here is one'

me: (looks at example) example is of a game in which the developer bought assets from the store AND added plenty of their own content.

there lies the problem. I have seen that happen more often then not

You know that assets are made as a basis to make your own, not to be "used as is"? I would feel cheated if every game I play has the same NPCs. The art of a game is important to me as is the gameplay. My experience is: a developer who uses assets as they come from the shop is not able or willing to make good gameplay either. I have yet to see a game that proofs otherwise. A proud game developer will also make sure that his game is unique in every aspect and I mean UNIQUE not UNITY (assets out of the box)

I would not feel that way at all.

in fact, I DONT want developers wasting time re-creating everything just to be 'unique' its a waste of resources and time.

take a simple example everyone can understand...toilets

And I tell you that the best games made on Unity do not look alike in ANY part. The ones that use the same toilet are all bad together.

7 Days to Die is one of my favorite games of all time. They used assets from the asset store, not many but they did.

I say using assets from the asset store and a good game are not remotely tied to each other.

The problem is. There's nothing wrong with that. It's not against the terms of use, Not against the any law. And really I doubt these templates are as complete as people say. I mean there has to be level design because if the asset maker even had levels in it and everything, one wonders why not sell the game themselves.

When you consider the angles. It doesn't make sense.

There's nothing preventing the latter and plenty of games have done the same. Fifa, Maddenb, CoD. BF, Half-Life, Doom, Gears of War. And as said it's been going opn in console and handheld games forever.

[quoe]I would feel cheated if every game I play has the same NPCs.[/quote] because trhe NPC's are clearly the reason you play the game right?

Proud does not always profitable. Look , developing is expensive and time consuming business. The point of assets was to offer time saving. You could either spend money to hire an artist to do assets or you could buy premade assets and basically focus your attention on other aspects.

Look at these games and try to show me the assets they are made of on the shop. All of them use assets by the way, but they put in the work necessary and have the means to make all of them unique and even if there is one or the other used as is, they are unrecognizable between all the unique ideas and well made gameplay.

https://unity3d.com/de/showcase/gallery

If you find one game that uses an asset as it is and transforms thousands of others to their own creations, no one will say anything, at least not someone who you would take seriously.

I still would not use that one toilet for my game as it is, just because it is at this time kind of the logo of all of these sh*tty Unity games, because for some reason they ALL have this toilet in them. Maybe it is the cheapest asset available.

correlation does not imply causation

which means your attempt at correlation is about as relevant as saying 'none of the best games start with the letter Z, therefore no good game can start with the letter Z'

you can 'prove' your correlation all you want doing so does NOT prove causation.

I click next on your game when it uses untransformed assets. I am not the only one. We become more every day. Feel free to make the game as you want to make it, I am free not to buy it and to tell everyone I know not to buy it. Your sales going down to nothing will prove the causation very well, more than I can on my own.

I have been playing games for 37 years one of my favorite games (as in the top 5 of all time) in which I put in 1000 hours or so USED AN ASSET FROM THE ASSET STORE

I doubt very seriously you would like the game or even look at it and franly I dont give a ♥♥♥♥ if you do or not.

They can not even make terrain. All of this asset flips are flat. As someone who did terrain for a fan made project of Neverwinter I understand why. To make a place look like a living breathing place , no matter if a village or a forest, is hard work and needs one to understand the level editor in and out and have at least some talent (and I found out I have not enough to make games this way).

this is so moronic.

Do you know what Speed Trees are? Its basically an auto-generated trees. 7 days to die uses them its one of the best games ever.

You know what the most popular map style in 7 days to Die by a LONG shot is?
is it the pre-made handcrafted map they made with the storyline? nope, its random gen map.

you have not a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ clue what your talking about

Mid post comment: I was about to link to a "version" of this game that was actually on the Steam Store. However, when I scrounged through my internet history, I discovered that "Big City War" has mysteriously turned into a completely different game

http://store.steampowered.com/app/600450/Shoot_Paint/

Mysterious indeed...

I just took a screenshot of my internet history that shows that Shoot Paint used to be called Big City War

Notice how the highlighted link is called "Me and my friend would like to test out your game :: Big City War General Discussion"

I actually contacted the person who created this thread on the sly, here

I apologize for the weak evidence, but I'm just using it as an example right now, rather than trying to prove anything... I'm currently getting in contact with people in the DigiHom group to see if there is a more solid means of proving that Shoot Paint used to be Big City War.

Oh, and Shoot Paint is a stolen game as well: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.DUTGames.PaintPoolBilliards

Anyway yeah... Side tracks aside, when I talk about Asset Flips THIS is the sort of stuff I'm talking about. Not Unturned, or anything created by Digital Homicide, because at least Digital Homicide put a modicum of effort into their crap.

Actually and here's the thing. Most people just judge the game based on whether or not they enjoy it. Not how it's made. You're free to not buy games for any reason you want and to share your opinions with others but when your reasoning boils down to. the equivalent of not buying a book because the author used a typewriter instead of handwritting the manuscript, don't be surporised if very few people just think you're being an elitist.

that is fair enough but understanding members of your clan (so to speak) do not agree with your parameters. even in this very conversation there is someone who feels its bad to use any asset from the asset store
