Steam Can't Play .FLAC Music Files?
Hello all, I've never had this problem before but now that I do, I'm not sure how to fix it.

I like gaming soundtracks a lot, and recently came across another, except all its music is listed as .FLAC files. I was able to wrestle with the system to get it to acknowledge the files are there (they weren't showing up on my music list at all), but even now that Steam can detect them, it can't seem to play them.

I was able to play the .FLAC files thanks to VLC Media Player, but most of my gaming music is on Steam, so it's weird for me to switch just to hear this one soundtrack.

Is there a way to get Steam to recognize .FLAC files, or is conversion to MP3 mandatory? I'd rather not have to go through the trouble of converting them all if there's a way for Steam to just play them.

And before anyone ask, yes, I did google the bloody issue. Seriously, the amount of times I have a problem and some smartass comes in and says "just google it" makes me want to bite something. There -are- articles saying that Steam is/was supposed to receive .FLAC support, but I wouldn't be here if it actually worked!

I've found posts older than three years saying .FLAC support was "yet" to come!

But assuming there's really no solution, then at least that answers my question succinctly, and I can start looking elsewhere rather than bashing my head, so thanks.

If anyone does have a concrete solution though, I'm open to hearing.

well it was listed here... http://store.steampowered.com/news/18747/ as part of the update in 2015. not sure why things arent working. i know most of the music i have is mp3 from games since the devs wanted to let the users dl it for playback on mp3 players.

ill try and get another user to confirm this in a bit.

maybe ask here... http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steammusic/discussions

Hold on, I've been doing some fiddling. I seem to have answered my question, albeit in an unsatisfactory way.

Both WRACK and To The Moon naturally download their OST's in both their MP3 and Flac formats, and can play either one, which is why they show up as two separate entities in the music list. In short, Steam is perfectly capable of playing .FLAC files, and I've confirmed it does so with at least these two games.

...Which means the problem I'm encountering trying to play the Soundtrack from Narcissu is a completely different problem, and unrelated to a compatibility issue.

Well, that at least crosses one problem off the list. Troubleshooting is fun, guys.

Thanks for the support, Hot. Sorry I assumed it was the wrong issue, hah.
