This has worked for me every time:
1) close Steam
2) open your Steam directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\Steam) in Explorer
(if you want, make a backup of this directory, but it's not usually necessary)
3) delete everything in the directory, as well as all subdirectories, EXCEPT:
- "Steam.exe" (file)
- "SteamApps" (subdirectory)
4) run Steam.exe - it will then download what it needs automatically (150 MB in my case).
5) If you have SteamGuard enabled, you will need to check your email for a new confirmation code ("Access from a new computer") before you can login.
6) Once you've logged in, "Check for Steam Client Updates" from the "Steam" menu in the top left corner, it should say you are up to date.
So, you did everything you were told and the issue persists? Cool, look out, here comes the cool gang to call you a liar for daring to even imply that Steam is imperfect.
I would also like to angrily point out that many inferior store fronts (like the terrible EA Origin and the very amazingly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Arc) written by inferior coders DON'T HAVE THIS ISSUE.
This is a pretty basic issue for the so-called great Valve to be having. Even if the fix worked for everyone. Which it DOESN'T
Still, why even bother fixing it? IT WILL JUST KEEP HAPPENING.
Well that's my experience anyway.
And don't talk to me about Steam support. That ♥♥♥♥ is more poorly organised than The Room by Tommy Wiseau, but without all the accidental charm.
And why do I need a bloody separate account for Steam Support?
Steam, you do NOT make games 'more convenient'. No more convenient than a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ CD Tower and a person standing in front of it saying "NOOOOOOOPE".
I will keep using your stupid crappy service but I am under no allusions as to WHY you are an industry leader - It's certainly not because you're able to provide the same experience for all your clients, or even a good one for some of them.
