The preference system is pretty broken
I thought I'd have a look through the specials list as I hadn't looked for a while and as I opened up the list I was met with a couple of "anime" "visual novels", as I detest these types of so called games I went to my preferences at the top of the page in order to add the tags to my block list........Imagine my surprise and dismay when I saw that my preferences were already there "Anime", "visual novels" and "nudity" - I set these tags to be hidden on every place possible and whilst they seem to work sometimes ( front page scrolling games ads keep these wretched pieces of software out) the majority of steam sections do not.

I will never buy any of those items, I have no interest in the love life of japanese schoolchildren (or the love life of anyone else for that matter), all you are accomplishing here is taking up space on things I will never buy so that things I might buy either miss out on that space or I just quit the list as I believe from that moment on that the list will have nothing that interests me.

Here is a capture of my pref's : http://i.imgur.com/pAPM5rp.jpg

And here is a capture of the first page of the "specials" : http://i.imgur.com/7xyJsn0.jpg

Both Clannad and Planetarium are Anime Visual Novels (which should have been blocked as they contain two of my "do not show prefs") and then down the bottom is Tokyo School Life which has all three of my tags that are suppossed to be filtered - Anime, Visual Novel, Nudity.....

I like Steam as it is by far the best place for both AAA and Indie games but I loose interest in looking for something new as soon as I'm met with crap that I will never buy ....... so instead I goto certain grey market sites to see what AAA games are around for a decent price. I fully realise that I am not one of your best customers at all with a measly ~500 games in my account but I hope that this issue can get sorted out and the system can get tweaked a little.

If you hover over the question mark above the text box, it reads

This won't completely exclude titles with these tags, but will lower the chance they get shown to you.

I'll never buy a Call of Duty game, personally, but I can guarantee Activision would not be okay with Steam allowing people to block their games entirely. Steam has to maintain a balance between keeping their customers happy (so developers have someone to sell to), and keeping developers happy (so Steam has something to sell its customers.)

I apreciate that but to have games with all of my unwanted tags present is just terrible algorithms. If the odd one slips through then fine but I recently have been exploring my recommended queue only to have 6 - 7 games with two or more of my unwanted tags present.

Still as you say I suspect this is more than likely publisher influenced.
That's frankly more than you should be seeing, based on my experience. It may just be that there is an unusually high number of those games being released recently.

Nope. There's more likely some other tage associated with these games that's not on the OP's block list. And or there is something in his browsing, playing or shopping behaviour that leads the system to think he'll like them.

I can quite assure you that there isn't anything in my habits that remotely suggests I like them unless each time you mark them as "Not Interested" the system somehow figures that I didn't really mean it.....that I might change my mind.

The only type of games I really object to seeing is the japanese school girl stuff as I find that pretty disgusting - adults playing games in which school children get naked.....a big NO Thanks. If it was up to me all anime visual novels would be put into a seperate tab on steam and not shown anywhere else so that those people who (for whatever reason) enjoy seeing kids have relationships with each other can still do so but I wont have to see them to even click "not interested"..

On my main account I have over 10,000 not interested titles checkmarked and my store page looks like a barren wasteland of empty slots, but there are still 1,000s of games I'm very interested in. I think the algorithm Valve uses to determine interest sucks.

Yes, it's beyond broken. But that is not my problem. It's Valves. I am no longer tenpted to buy anything directly here.

Their loss, not mine.

Is this a rant against Valve, or "the weeaboos"?

It's about a tool not working as intended, I am no one to judge others and their tastes.

Couldn't agree more. It's absolutely broken, I can't even FIND stuff I want to buy anymore their store page is so convoluted and no longer even bother trying to search through the mess.

It would certainly be interesting to know how the system works. I haven't put the effort into blocking things, but most things displayed really are uninteresting. But maybe that is to be expected as it would be amazing if every single game was great.

While it doesn't matter, I'm a main consumer of those nudity games. I just hope they appear on my radar, as I agree that finding things not suggested is difficult.
