SAMURAI SHODOWN NEOGEO COLLECTION

SS Collection review - read before buying!
FYI, I got this for free on Epic, hence why no formal review... anyways, here's my thoughts...

Man, this collection is pretty crappy... not gonna lie... I'm quite disappointed that we waited sooooooo much for this... like, it's legit half-arsed AT BEST.

I'm really bummed, I was even gonna pay for it on Steam, but oh boy... let's start with the "museum":

- The History section is just a joke... an ugly box of text for the "history" part, and for more than half the games listed there, it's just pictures... not even a bit of text, no context, no explanation, no nothing. I've got google, I don't need to pay for this.

- The character gallery section is just a bunch of art pieces with ZERO info, context or explanation... again, I can just google them if that's all they were gonna do. Sure, there's the usual "fact sheet" for each character, but you legit find more info on a wiki page.

- The "behind the scenes" section: Again, just a bunch of random jpgs with ZERO info, context or explanation. Why even bother? =/

- The "pro match videos"... first of all, these super small sized videos like it's 1999 all over again... no translation, just the same ugly text box which stops working well when the video ends... and you can't pause the video, go back or forward... like... dude, what's the point of tourney replays if you can't go back and watch a hype moment or a smart play???

- The interviews and the music section are fine I guess... hard to mess those up though...

As for the rest, some random thoughts:

- First of all, the UI is garbage... not the design mind you, that much is fine, but the UI in general is clunky and it doesn't even work correctly... like, in window mode, if you reduce the window size, you can't enlarge it anymore and it'll start behaving weirdly. When you reduce the size EVERYTHING gets reduced, even the game screen... like why can you even do that? It's just... no...

- Lack of options: not even sound options... not even a frickin volume slider... in 2020... =/

- No lobbies, you need to do a lot of clicking to get into even searching a game.

- The netcode is... well... not great, let's put it that way... I've seen worse sure, I've seen MUCH better. Definetly not worth getting excited about it, and definetly not worth spending money for it.

- Oh and get this: the game fricking lags when you're playing arcade by yourself waiting for a match... like WHATTT??? Are you kidding me???? Why would it lag??? you get all the lag of on-line play, but against the CPU... gg... just gg.

- Lots of bugs and crashes, obviously.

So in short, this is just a lazy re-skin of their SF30th collection, which was itself already pretty bad. They did ZERO improvements that I could see. This is a blatant cash-grab with the very utmost minumin effort put into it. I've seen better college projects than this, for real...

Oh and to top it off, you need 10 gigs for this... because f you why not (yes, I know, the videos).

Fortunately I got this for free on the EGS, but as I said, I was ready to buy it on Steam... dodged that bullet... even so, I'm still mad that I had to open an EGS account for this.

So yeah, in short, if you were planning on buying this... well now you know what to expect.

They should have included:
- hacks / cheats (for bosses... or made them playable by default)
- infinite time options for both char. select and in-game
- round count option
- bevels containing char. moves lists (like in the arcades)
- a comprehensive commands and secrets booklet in the options menu
- video effects plugin options

...Having said that, given it's free on Epic, and only on Steam for a quick cash-grab; and other than the front end, they probably just threw together an emulator to run the games -- so as to promote sales of the reboot.

I still like the original arcade games. Those images are also NOT JPGs at all. They're sharply-rendered high-quality scans.:cleanfloppy:
