I keep my Steam up to date and I am on a Windows machine.
What version of Steam are you on, what OS are you running, etc?
Have you looked through past Discussion threads for ways to try to un and re install?

I asked someone who is more experienced than me (not hard to do) about this and got their ok to share.
"do you know how to get to the game files for mac?"
