I just returned after a long hiatus. It's alive.

I'm playing directly from their launcher - Emerald Ocean has about 400-500 people online everyday at some point or another (at least it has been so this past week when I returned to the game).

However, the subscription ocean is dead, and I only had the one pirate there, so I'm sad to lose everything and having to start anew. Oh well

Cerulean isn't dead, it is a lot less active than Emerald however.

Everytime I tried playing in it, nothing being run at all, no more than 20 people online. At least on Emerald I can find people to play with at anytime

I used to love the game but have been away for around five years. I just can't get motivated to go back in with how slow progress is for achievements. Yeah, they should require some effort, but I spent over 600 hours and still only have 22% of achievements. There's just so many that are so obscure or difficult that it's no wonder that their completion rates are so low. Extensive content is one thing, but feeling accomplishments further and further apart was another.

I did notice that they cut the number of achievements by 3/4 for Dark Seas, but I didn't feel like starting over there either. And that version apparently never caught on anyway, so I'm glad for not going there.

Dark Seas was DOA. I wouldn't worry too much about achievements unless that's your main goal in a game. They don't have any added bonus in YPP other than being there.

I'd also check mantid to see how many trophies you actually have, steam doesn't have them all. https://ypp.mantid.org/trophies/?ocean=emerald
