i'm not complaining about a stupid toggle. i'm complaining about how texture smoothing all but destroys how a sprite/pixel art game originally looked.
do people purposely ignore the point when someone complains about something like this? because that's twice now that it's happened.
you see someone complaining about how ugly texture smoothing is and suddenly people start replying under assumptions like "he's complaining that it can be toggled" or "he's complaining that it's there at all".
no, what i was talking about is how the results of texture smoothing looks.
but no...i'm just pissy because something can be toggled or is there at all...that MUST be why i'm complaining.
"he's complaining that it's there at all"
You're basically "Expected" to release pixel art games with that kind of filter (Unless you're going for 8 bit style) because of a sizable amount of people having ♥♥♥♥ taste. It's that simple.
finally, someone else who gets what i'm complaining about!
Said everyone ever.
i heard similar comments from people on a discord server i'm on when talking about this and the whole time i'm like... "you can't be serious"
preference is one thing but to say the devs originally intended the game to look like amateurish color blobs smeared across the screen is unbelievable.
i think a good comparison of how the original sprite art looks compared to texture smoothing would be how X's armor looked in the X legacy collection challenge fights since the armor had this texture smoothing applied while everything else was left in its original graphics.
that was not a good look for X.
The only way around this problem would be to redraw all the sprites/level textures to scale by hand with the specific intention of remaining on-model to the original vision of what each character/object is meant to look like, but most companies don't seem to want to put in the work in their re-releases to do this and so we are left with these crappy filters that smear details.
