texture smoothing is vomit inducing
why? why do you want to RUIN these games, crapcom?

texture smoothing, when used on pixel/sprite art games, is FUGLY. it is practically a fact.

those screenshots are hideous!

no...i'm gonna continue EMULATING these old games when i want to play them. i wouldn't pay you 1 penny for this.

edit: seriously...why do game devs simply refuse to even try to understand that texture smoothing like this objectively destroys the aesthetic qualities of sprite/pixel art games? it's an undeniable downgrade in visual quality.

You can turn it off. Watch the trailer.

i'm not complaining about a stupid toggle. i'm complaining about how texture smoothing all but destroys how a sprite/pixel art game originally looked.

Just... Play without the filter. You actually can. That's like the EASIEST thing you do.

do people purposely ignore the point when someone complains about something like this? because that's twice now that it's happened.

you see someone complaining about how ugly texture smoothing is and suddenly people start replying under assumptions like "he's complaining that it can be toggled" or "he's complaining that it's there at all".

no, what i was talking about is how the results of texture smoothing looks.

but no...i'm just pissy because something can be toggled or is there at all...that MUST be why i'm complaining.

Chances are the emulator you use has a similar filter option.

They include that ♥♥♥♥♥♥ filter because a lot of people who don't understand crap about pixel art more often than not complain about the graphics looking "Blocky", so classic games and whatnot ship with this filter to shut them up while the rest of us simply turn it off.

You're basically "Expected" to release pixel art games with that kind of filter (Unless you're going for 8 bit style) because of a sizable amount of people having ♥♥♥♥ taste. It's that simple.

I agree that the filter they have shown off looks terrible, but I don't really know about a filter that wouldn't look terrible either. It probably doesn't matter how much anyone complains, the filter isn't getting any better. You are better off just toggling it off than wasting your time complaining about it. 16 bit graphics look better than filtered graphics anyway, in my opinion.

"16 bit graphics look better than filtered graphics anyway, in my opinion."

Said everyone ever.

You would be surprised. I have been on corners of the internet where people even go so far as to say "The filter makes the game look the way the devs always intended but couldn't due to hardware limitations" and crap like that. I'm not really interested in getting into the topic of which is superior though. I prefer the original, unfiltered graphics and that is what I will use. If someone else feels otherwise, then whatever floats their boat.

i heard similar comments from people on a discord server i'm on when talking about this and the whole time i'm like... "you can't be serious"

preference is one thing but to say the devs originally intended the game to look like amateurish color blobs smeared across the screen is unbelievable.

i think a good comparison of how the original sprite art looks compared to texture smoothing would be how X's armor looked in the X legacy collection challenge fights since the armor had this texture smoothing applied while everything else was left in its original graphics.

that was not a good look for X.

I have so much fun with people who complain without a reason. BTW I Love texture smoothing, it makes the game perfect to me (I played on emulator my whole life so i know what a pixeled game is)

The core of the issue is that as far as I know, nobody has ever managed to figure out how to apply a filter that doesn't result in a loss in detail. You might be able to on occasion find a filter that looks half decent when used with a specific game, but that's usually more visually simplistic games with flat colors, generally a lack of detail by design. The moment you try to apply a filter to something meant to have detail, that detail will often be lost, with some results being worse than others even in the same game.

The only way around this problem would be to redraw all the sprites/level textures to scale by hand with the specific intention of remaining on-model to the original vision of what each character/object is meant to look like, but most companies don't seem to want to put in the work in their re-releases to do this and so we are left with these crappy filters that smear details.
