I recommend using the lab area to grind up your saber and buster to max level, there's a great spot for this that looks like a slope that's higher on the left side with a spider nest at the top, provided you haven't done the mission where you return here. You can return without accepting any missions by using the transerver located in the base, look for the world TRANCE on the wall while using the elevator.
The reason why you are going to want to do this is because having your full moveset (At least with the weapons you start with) will make your life much easier and help you to lose fewer lives, which makes saving them up a lot easier.
Keep in mind that weapon EXP is based on the specific actions you use to kill enemies. You can grind up to max by using any attack with the same specific weapon type, but you will level up much faster if you use the specific attacks that leads up to the next attack on that action. This is most important to keep in mind for the saber, not so much everything else. IIRC the tree looks like this:
Ground Slashes: 1 slash - 2 slashes - 3 slashes - Charged slash - Faster charged slash
Air Slashes: Air Slash - Spinning slash
Dash Slashes: Dash Slash - Rolling slash
For the other weapons, you can just grind them up without worrying about the specific attack you are using as far as I know, anyone with other information can feel free to correct me. I would at least prioritize using their charged up attacks once you have access to them while grinding though to be sure.
Once you have your weapons leveled up, make sure you talk to Ciel to save your game. You can then start doing missions and keep an eye open for 1-up locations, and hope to get lucky with them dropping from enemies.
