Keeping big mushrooms in game.
I think we should keep different sized mushrooms, but add caveats to their existence. During the Devonian, Prototaxities was able to grow as large as a tree. So I think we should be able to have those in game. To facilitate this, there needs to be a link between reproduction, height and growth. So the taller a fungi grows, the longer it takes to reach reproductive status, but the spores can than travel a farther area. Which is an advantage the smaller fungi would lack.

While also adding different types of stalks based on Prototaxities. So in order for a fungi to grow large, they'd need to evolve a type of stalk than can grow large. This should help create variation among the different types of fungi.

We could have an added effect in that the adults are very difficult to eat, but the young are rather easy to eat. To help control the population. While its likely that the big mushrooms may inevitably go extinct, this would still allow for such things to exist.

Thanks so much for your feedback <3

This was my intention too :) ! In what respect is your suggestion different from how it currently works? Very open to suggestions!

For me, the challenge with prototaxites is that they don't seem to have clear spore producing organ, and I like to have that part visualized... let me know how you (or everyone else reading this) would solve that!

So, I'm not exactly aware with how the current system for Fungi height growth works. But I did post a compilation of artwork depicting Prototaxities.

For the cap, Prototaxities appears to be covered in spore producing filaments, so you could have a layered, cone-like shape. These filaments could form into one large disk, or appear similar to leaves, or be bulbous pustules.

Regardless, to grow large, a fungi would need a type of stalk that can support it. I think that to separate a fungi stalk that can't grow large, the ones that can will have a darker coloration, with a weave-like texture to it. These could also evolve a branched version.

So, to grow large, there needs to be a connection with size, time, and resources specifically. I would also put a temperature tolerance as I think they would only do well in tropical - temperate habitats. Meaning large fungi would not do well in cold habitats. The larger a fungi grows, the further spores can be spread by wind. However, this can only be supported by large amounts of detritus in the soil as it would take a long time for them to reach the size needed to begin reproduction. So the larger a fungi is, the older it becomes in order to reach that state. If theres not enough detritus, the giant fungi will die before reaching adulthood. This should possibly naturally create a cap for size and the amount of time it can survive.
I like this idea too. What about poisonous mushrooms and bioluminescents ones ? I did not played for a couple months, so sorry if they are already there ...

Mushrooms already have both faintly and strongly bioluminescent caps as an option, as well as a poison slider.

What if there was a cap that attracted animals to it, using the animals as a means to spread spores?
isnt there already a cap for that in game?
If not, it would indeed be interesting
