How does the deep sea work?

i know that irl there is a nearly endless fall of marine snow feeding the wildlife but how does the marine snow work in game? does a tile have to have a floating alage species abowe it for it to have marine snow or do teh deep sea animals swim up to the surface and chow down on the floating algae?

If I'm not mistaken, right now if there are floating micro algae, the game assumes there will be marine snow in the deep sea slot... but however it ends up working in the end, I think the main question here is: how do I communicate this to the player, so posts like this are no longer necessary? I haven't figured it out yet.
