Basically, the game underperformed despite Crystal Dynamics updating the game and struggling to keep a playerbase. They had to pull the plug eventually so Embracer can make them work on other projects. Why it's being delisted from Steam is most likely to curb a potential licensing fisaco with Square and Disney down the line.
It's a licensed game, all of them get taken down/pulled from digital stores when the license expires and it's not renewed.
Typically video game companies keep renewing the licenses as long as it's profitable, but Marvel IP is quite expensive to license due to how its value has been inflated by the massive success of the movies. So the point where it makes no sense to renew the license anymore tends to come up quite fast if the game does not sell massive amounts. Marvel's Avengers simply did not reach those amounts of copies sold, for several reasons.
Not to mention, you HAVE to level each hero directly and gear them. (ie. you have to play them to level up and gear up......so it was annoying as F.
Once the story was finished, so was my interest.
This is why these type of games never, EVER work, they could have done so much more, like their own version of Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow and so on, their own Origin stories in this game's engine, it would have been so much fun to experience, but nope.
It is debatable, alot of them now are getting worse and worse..
Basically Marvel is on its deathbed, it can be saved if they just stop what they are doing....the same applies for Starwars, Stop doing what they are doing and they can save it.
Deadpool comes to mind, only lasted on steam for 6 months before getting taken down.
Most video game companies are businesses, not charities. They have to make profit so they can pay salaries to their staff and dividends to shareholders/investors.
Would you keep renewing a license that say, costs 1 million a year but the game only sells for 100 000 a year? No you would not, this is just simple math. And even if all the license fees would just be a cut from the profits instead, there would still be ongoing development costs that need to stay lower than the profits of the game. You can't operate on loss forever.
But then on top of that, dev studio Crystal Dynamics sold to Embracer group by SquareEnix. So the original devs are not with the original publisher anymore, and the contract is up.
On top of *all* of that, the game was a mess at launch, and while it is (imo) okay today, it never overcame that bad launch or impressions, and stayed on a relatively bad live service model for years before it was finally discontinued when the game was put on ice.
Today, all the stuff is unlocked, and you can play as much as you want without any issue. And *this* version of the game? Great to play with friends sometimes.
I can see you're a literal kind of person there when clearly my comment was sarcasm or, at minimum, satirical in nature. However, you do realize there are companies that write off millions, if not billions, of dollars (in tax credits and whatnot) every year and do whatever it takes to continue "profitable" operations or at least keep their numbers in the black, right? There are also companies that actually value their customer base and create products that appeal to their market base or they at least make an attempt to appeal to their market base by listening to the feedback that is received. Has this company done that? I'm gonna say no they have not. It also appears they just keep on trucking ahead in the same direction thinking they can do whatever they want angering their customer base. It's no wonder they appear to be having negative repercussions.
