The first campaign's story missions are singleplayer content, side missions in the campaign can be played in co-op and after you finish this first one, the other campaigns allow full multiplayer in groups of up to four players.
Sorry for the intrusion, but I had the same question. I might buy this game but only if I can coop with my wife. Could you please confirm that after the first single player part, the game is fully playable in coop?
How big is the single player part compared to the rest of the story? Would you say about 10%? Thanks a lot.
The collectible items are not locked into the missions though, you can find all of them later on from randomized loot chests over time as you play the multiplayer supported content.
There are some interactable points in the singleplayer missions though which might trigger a voice line etc. which you can miss entirely, but the singleplayer campaign can be replayed as many times you wish after you have completed it.
It can also be skipped right away and you can dive into the multiplayer content from the start by clicling on the Initiative mode, but doing so gives you a recap cutscene which spoils the story. It can also mess up your intended progression, making the singleplayer campaign much harder when you play through it later on. So I do not recommend skipping the campaign. Don't click on the Initiative button in the first menu of the game at all until you've finished the campaign, if you do it will trigger the spoiler cutscene immediately.
Right now there are three additional campaigns which have been added and all of these have co-op enabled except maybe for the first mission.
They don't have the random mathmaker enabled though, but you can make up to four player groups through Steam invites.
The chronological progression of the story goes so that you should play through the singleplayer campaign first, doing the optional co-op side missions in it with your wife as soon as these become available, and then finishing a SHIELD mission chain in the Initiative mode(or it could be in the story campaign too, it's been so long I don't remember) related to mysterious tachion storms. This sets up the story line for the second story campaign, "Taking AIM", which features Kate Bishop as the new playable Avenger. The other two post launch campaigns can be played after that, but you should try level up your Avengers in the Initiative mode between doing these. The initiative mode supports groups of up to four players too, and has also a random matchmaker.
