What's the resolution you're using and on what GPU? I get between 10 and 11GB utilized by the game at 2560x1440p with every single setting at maximum, so with these settings the game would still crash even with an RTX 3080.
Even though in theory this is true, the game is simply poorly optimized. I'm getting this error randomly, even on the Chimera. There was a time the issue was mostly solved and rarely happened. Now since the patch dropped, it's at its worst. I got this error 3 times in the Chimera, and got one as soon as I launched and entered a mission.
I have a 1060, with 6GB dedicated + 8 Shared. I play on 1080p, and not even maxed out. The game rarely stutters, except for one very specific snow map. I've already tried to play with two Screens, while having task manager on the other screen to monitor it, and the game never reached even near full capacity.
The more open maps use more memory, hence the stuttering and increased chance of crashing when doing those.
Yes,but like I said, the game is crashing at the Chimera, a very small map. This is 100% an optimization issue. Also, this is the only game I own which shuts down because of lack of memory (even though in reality, there isn't). Usually games simple start to stutter and have frame drops. And like I've said, this issue appeared in one of the earlier patches, but got eventually sorted out - I rarely had any crashes, but now it's worse than ever before
My guess is that it suddenly tries to allocate more memory than you have and then crashes as a result. It should throttle your performance instead but a persistent core issue in the code causes these allocation spikes. It crashes before any of that VRAM even gets utilized and thus this spike doesn't appear in task manager. It's calling for more memory, doesn't find it and then crashes.
Wow, this sounds awful! I have a 1080 Ti with 11 GB and it crashes while playing the game in FullHD...
Yeah, I have not had a single error of this type after getting a 16GB GPU. You can still get a crash for other reasons but the Device Hung crash is due to tapping out the VRAM.
I recently confirmed that the Chimera is actually one of the more resource hungry maps as well, it eats over 10GB of VRAM at my settings.
That should not be the solution. The game is simply poorly optimized when it comes to VRAM consuption, and something should've been made in that regard
I've played Shadow of Tomb Raider maxed out, for more than 100 hours, and it never EVER crashed once with this error.
The issue REALLY is the game itself, on a technical level. There's some memory issues with it. It doesn't make sense for it to consume so much VRAM, even with lower settings, and to the point of crashing
Yes, that game uses the same engine, so the issue is probably in it. VRAM is going up in the new GPU's so over time this issue will be fixed that way. It's not unusual that old hardware can't properly run new games anymore.
