That generates a bandwagon effect from others adding their whines and then the content creators and media sites latch on so everything snowballs.
I say this quite often but content creation has changed the way folk consume games so there's less focus on the journey because folk are fixated on the myth of endgame. A new game arrives and instantly there's a deluge of videos and streams of gameplay that tend to rush through because they need to keep pace to ride the monetization wave at launch. Then you have the tips & tricks and ways to streamline or get to some target in the most optimal way. By the time folk actually get to play the game they've possibly spoilered the bulk of it via a stream and convinced themselves that in order to have fun they must play specifically.
If you want to enjoy a game thats piqued your interest then go dark and avoid content involving it as much as possible.
boring.
Licenses are the only things that hinder usage of characters. If a company snags an exclusive right to a character for whatever reason anther game company can't use them. Or if a company makes a deal with a developer to limit usage of character to their system alone. That isn't just for this game it is for any game that licenses their characters from anther company. Sony in this case paid for spider-man to exclusive to their system with this game. It is that simple. There will always be reasons a company can't just break a contract without consequences. Sony paid Square Enix accepted the money Spider-man is on sony systems only. Just because the game is dying doesn't mean they can just ninja add Spider-man onto the other systems without getting sued.
- Gear didn't change appearance at all so for people like me who are loot goblins in games like Borderlands, Destiny, etc, other than bigger numbers there was no reason to grind for loot.
- Content that did not play to the strengths of the IP. I have said it before and I will say it again I have NO idea why they didn't play into the MCU harder, I get it they wanted to be original but heres the thing, most of the people playing this game were fans of the MCU.
The MCU was at the tail end of it's first big 20-23 movie long saga that spanned 10 years. There are kids playing this game who ONLY every knew the Avengers from the MCU, they've never read a comic book cause lets be honest watching a few movies every year to keep up with the MCU is easier than starting ANYWHERE in comics because with comicbooks theres literally almost 100 years of context you'd be missing regardless of which book you pick up to read. Why would they not play into the MCU?? Even if they content was something like an raid where the boss fight at the end is Thanos on Titan from the MCU, even if the missions didn't have the actors or the movie context, if they just had Thanos or Ultron or Hela, or Loki, boss fights in settings that were similar to the movies it would have helped.
Imagine how easy it would have been to set up a string of "MCU inspired" mission chains that led to one of those boss fights using villains seen in the films? And then maybe a Battle of New York mission that ended with you saving NY from the Chitauri invasion.
Not every mission in the game NEEDED to be connected to the main story, they could have used this game's mission variety as a one stop shop playground for ALL things Marvel, movie inspired missions, comic inspired missions, animated series inspired missions, etc. This would have been content that was short, perhaps not easy but simple content to make for this game that was already riding on the coattails of the MCU.
- Content was trickled out too slowly. In my opinion there is no excuse for this, they could have dont so much more, Square has too much money for this game to have had the content droughts that it did. Regardless of whether or not you agree with me on the idea that they should have EMBRACED (no pun intended) the inevitable comparisons to the MCU or not, I think most would agree the content droughts were inexcusable when the company who made the game is as big as SquareEnix is, they had the ability to do better they just didn't.
I'm sure theres more reasons but those are the ones that always come to mind for me personally. This game had every reason to succeed, it had every reason to be a Marvel fans dream, it had every reason to be the next best thing to Marvel Ultimate Alliance or the late Marvel Heroes, but it looked at every single one of those reasons and just said "♥♥♥♥ that" and THAT'S why this game is dead now in my humble opinion.
Nothing better then someone who never played the game have opinion and want to lecture people why game failed. Cosmetics are only thing behind paywall, every game have that and they sale a lot. There wasnt a single item in store that give you any gameplay advantage over others.
because it was a games as a service game
because the dlc campaigns required online
thankfully all that is now gone and we can all play it without restrictions.
i wish other devs of other games with solo gameplay locked behind an online only restriction did this.
just a shame one last update can't be thrown together that adds spider-man for pc and xbox players.
