What am I doing wrong?
I'm at a point where I'm still having fun with the game, but the difficulty spike is all over the place. One minute I almost fall asleep while bashing enemies on normal, the next minute enemies massacre me in 4-5 hits, still on normal.
They're not over leveled, same level enemies as myself. If I lower to easy, the problem still occurs sometimes.
Most enemy types have range attacks, while for example Black Widow has a pretty crap range attack, and I have to run up to a robot and bash it while an other enemy shoots me in the back.
Beside the usual 'git gud' type answers, what'd be the good tactic here?

the thing about difficulty in this game is that the enemies are random, synthoids for example are far easier to deal with than adaptoids, but enemy placement is for the most part random. So you run a hive on challenge 1 and you have a room full of adaptoids and riotbots which is not easy to deal with, but you run the same hive on challenge 4 and the same room is filled with synthoids and drones which is very easy to deal with. So apart from extra modifiers and enemy aggressiveness, difficulty is actually very random.

As for your problem it is mostly about managing aggro and positioning, don't attack straight away because the enemies will all aggro on you if you are in range. Run around a bit and lose aggro and let it transfer to the ai, then engage isolated targets and the positioning part is about facing the ranged enemies while fighting your target so you can see their attacks and dodge them, or deal with them first. Also target priority, it is usually better to ignore the most dangerous enemies and concentrate first on the weaker enemies just to reduce numbers so you can better focus on real threats.

Thanks I'll try that!

Trust me, man. It's not you. This game is just badly designed. Switch to Kate and main scattershot arrow while dodging any projectiles fired at you and working around cover and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

I'm at the campaign where Thor appears, and I thought 'now the fun begins', and the wave of enemies just murder Thor in few seconds. :D
Thus far Kamala appears to be the most efficient character for me.

some robots are actually stronger than you and they can kill you in a few hits and that is true for all difficulties. Save them for last.

non-robot AIM enemies or the skinny robots (except the armored skydog troopers, they are basically as tanky as robots) are easy to kill so kill them first. Drones are easy to kill too.

Not sure if you watched Iron Man 2, but the "kill box" idea mentioned in that movie completely applies to this game.

When enemies spawn around you, the first thing you need to do is get out of the "kill box" and find a safe spot. This is easy if you are fighting outdoors: get to the high ground or w/e

things are a bit more BS if you are fighting indoor or you are capturing a ring. Just spam dodge, takedowns and abilities.

the game is actually not too bad once you figure it out. Once you can beat the robots convincingly... you can beat them over and over in different missions lol.

Thanks, really helpful advice, I'll try that too!

if you played multi p w/3 others you prob wouldnt even notice. As solo you get focused more often. Also ranged mods on a mission can take off 3/4 your life unless you have some def stats.

Your characters are gear dependent, BW actually has amazing ranged. Remember the same gear drops in C2 as C4 so you are not doing yourself any favors by trying harder content except the challenge.
Remember gray and yellow can be parried, red can only be dodged. Some attacks require a double dodge to dodge. When I started I just double dodged everything. ctrl ctrl back to back. The battery effect makes a huge difference in your dps, this means you are putting a cool status on ine weapon and a hot on the other.
Learn your characters oh snap heroics.
Cap, brooklen brawler instant heal and if spec infinite takedowns
BW invisibility does massive takedowns and you can run out of any jam and go find greek orbs
Ironman hulk suit full heal
Clint, recovery arrow and hunter arrow can be be spec to heal
Kate can use afterglow but requires to press 1 and then 1 again
Hulk thunderclap can leave green heal on ground.
Ms Marvel full heal with 1 button.
Play defensive in the beginning and let your companions take the hits while you practice dodging around the room for a minute.
You can do your skill points in any order you choose, so if you are level 20? You can fill out mastery points before basic if you want.
Always takexown. takedowns heal you.
Good luck.

Don't forget to check Mission Modifiers. There are some that can make you do double melee or double ranged damage, which helps you wipe rooms of enemies depending on your build, and might make you think you're OP when you'll just lose it next mission. :)

The long range enemy attacks was annoying at first but after a while you learn that jumping after and during combos will keep you out of trouble. You also have to keep on an eye on enemies in the distance if you're not going to attack them and be prepared to dodge a missile or two until you have time to deal with the source of the missiles. When you actually see the speed missiles move, you'll realize it's not very fast. You have plenty of time to dodge a missile from it's point of origin (if you're not standing right next to the enemy). The problem with range is you'll have less time to react if you don't see it coming. I still can not precisely read off screen range indicators, but I manged to complete everything in the game by rotating the camera often to watch enemies and using heroics to quickly observe the battlefield and react accordingly.

Black Widow isn't really my favorite but I've manged. My playstyle with her is using Widow's Line a lot. It keeps you moving and allows you to instantly get into melee range whether the enemy is on the ground or in the air. For air enemies, you can actually destroy multiple enemies one at a time in mid air without landing if you don't mash buttons and time Widow's Line properly in between attacks. Adjust Widow's Bite (BW's Heroic Assault) to have a larger radius and more charges then use it when you need to stun a group of melee enemies who manage to surround you.

This is for all heroes. You can hold the Heroic Assault to delay the attack but it will keep you invincible, so if you see a powerful attack or several attacks coming at once in your direction then just hold the Heroic Assault for 2 to 3 seconds of invincibility. Set the Mastery for more charges and you've got more than one Heroic Assault to rely on.
