I agree, this should be made more clear in the game.
Do they even play their own game??? A lot of bloated lore within the codex, but not a single description of status effects, attributes or game mechanics in general.
I can't believe that I just don't find the specific section within the menus which explains everything.
One guide I read referred to the status effects as Hot and Cold, basically grouping statuses by color. Hot (Positive) colors are more on the red side and Cold (Negative) are closer to blue.
Pym (Red), Plasma (Orange), and Cosmic (Yellow) are closer to the red hue so they are Hot or Positive.
Gamma (Green), Frost (Light Blue), and Shock (Dark/Navy Blue) would be Cold or Negative.
Considering the new status effect Vibranium is Purple, it's closer to Blue so it would be a Cold / Negative effect and I'd assume the other new effect (Sonic) to be Hot / Positive.
I hope that makes sense.

Positive: applying damage to the victim
negative: getting more damage from other sources? (hence, reducing resistance?)
Then the colour sheme isn't exactly right, since gamma (cold) has a dot and an explosion-effect uppon death.
While Pym (hot) reduces resistances and damageoutput of the victim by shrinking the enemy.
To my observation Vibranium reduces damage-resistance, especially from physical attacks.
And Sound applies a big stun-area-damage.
Vibranium is (dark) purple. (Although red+blue= purple, refering to the rainbow-sheme it's the most cold colour there...)
Sound is (light) orange, so more hot.
So in this case. the colour-sheme is correct.
as for above, there is no logic to anything in this game, don't even try to apply logic, they make this stuff up as they go. Gear doesn't make sense, perks don't make sense, systems don't make sense, enemy attack order doesn't make sense, they are just copying things from other games without understanding why it is in those games in the first place.
There's nothing to explain how to deal with Shields, what each Status Effect does, how to deal with heavier enemy types, etc... This is less than informative to players. It's actively killing brain cells because it's such a friggin no brainer. It hurts my soul that common sense is lacking to the Nth degree everywhere...
Wanna know the answer I got on the Discord?
"It'S eXpLaInEd In ThE hArM rOoM". That is the WORST friggin answer.
Why is vibranium "positiv" if it add a reducing resistnace debuff?
Why is Sonic "negativ" if it does damage?!?
