Lossless Scaling Frame Gen sticking to monitor's refresh rate rather than the application—How to fix it without restarting PC?
Forgot to edit post: Culprit was when activate windows pops up.

After a while of using the PC, Lossless Scaling Frame Gen will stick to your refresh rate rather than the game or chrome video you're watching, as a result maxing out GPU usage. I have since tried to fix it by restarting the GPU using the Restart64.exe by CRU, and CTRL+SHIFT+WIN+B,—both did not work. I need your guys input on how to fix it rather than restarting the PC all the time.

On a good day when I'm watching chrome on my 165hz, it should be either 30 or 60 / X

I have since tried to replicate the bug and figure out what's causing it, but to no avail.

  • Frame Gen while the RTSS FPS overlay was on-screen in apex; it didn't trigger the bug and worked perfectly
  • Locking the Windows 10 screen
  • Changing the monitor’s refresh rate
  • Alt-tabbing in and out

It seems to be happening on the most randomest time rather than an application triggering it, since it also happened when I left the PC for an hour, still the youtube video i left to, still on fullscreen, i hit scale bind and now its showing a top left counter of 165/330. Whether firing in chrome or a game, the frame generation continued to wanting to double/triple my monitor’s refresh rate, hogging the gpu usage to max. Maybe there's a process in "Services.msc" that's interfering with the app once it gets eventually turned on?

I don't have any active overlays installed other than RTSS, I also have deleted my monitors overlay app and all Xbox related stuff including game bar overlay using Revo. But the bug still happens almost everyday, then id have to restart pc. I primarily use the app for watching videos on Chrome rather than gaming, could that be the cause of the bug?

The only solution I've found is restarting PC, signing out and ending process in task manager also didnt work.

Edit: update—Its bugged right now and I went and uninstalled LS thru revo, so everything is fresh even settings, I only have steam and kaspersky in taskbar, and i opened app, checked settings, ticked run as admin, restart app, opened it, fired to fullscreened youtube vid, and still sticking to my max refresh rate of 165, chugging out 330 frames. All legacy versions does the same, even the beta.

I dont think it matters but heres a screenshot of the status info in LS and taskbar and fps counter https://imgur.com/a/ls-ARR8VnJ

Its firing to the intended application but somehow is wanting to double my refresh rate. making the gpu use 100%. I used X2 performance, tried vsync and default, max latency 1.

I turn off my pc everyday and i dont have fast boot enabled, this bug happens after at least i guess 3-5 hours has elapsed of using the PC.

Maybe it helps to restart the GPU driver so you don't need to reboot. Get CRU:
https://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU

Run the included restart64.exe to restart the driver.

Check that you don't have an overlay like alienwares new overlay update with control center or razers/asus's new razer updates(gaming laptops/proprietary desktops).. this was happening to me on many of my PCs and it was new overlay updates to select apps. It permanently went away when I figured out which one it was.

Thanks, will try that CRU once it bugs out again. I don't have any overlays I think, other than RTSS, I've since deleted all Xbox including the game bar overlay and my monitors overlay OSD sidekick in revo. I don't have alienware stuff, but i do have razer synapse but i don't have overlays on it? Since i only have it for the mouse? hmm im still thinking if i have any other overlays

Restart64.exe works but may make the Explorer go wonky after too much of it (it's not unsafe to do though). You can also try CTRL+SHIFT+WIN+B, which is said to re-initialize your monitor with DWM.

Could you try both restart64.exe and CTRL+SHIFT+WIN+B, and report back their effects on your issue?

In that case restart the DWM:
taskkill /F /IM dwm.exe

Will this delete System32?

It only kills the task.

Dang it, suspected as much when i used it and it didn't delete System32. I've been meaning to delete System32 as my ultimate act of defiance against Microsoft, but it won't let me.

even RTSS has an overlay to disable. LS will show fps nevertheless. Im not sure tho, how deactivating RTSS overlay has impact on msi afterburner. I dont use it.

If i'm not mistaken, RTSS's overlay is not rendered as a separate layer drawn over top of your game. It is part of your game's fully rendered frame. Which is why it can be seen in screenshots. As such, it should not affect LS's functioning.

Could you re-install LS? And if that doesn't work try a legacy version?

Probably a stupid thought, but if restarting Windows fixes it, might it be an issue related to up time somehow? For anyone who has experienced this issue, do you regularly shut down or restart your PC or not?
