Lossless Scaling

Lossless Scaling

LS "disconnects" from MSFS2024
I've noticed several times now that FS kinda loses the plot sometimes with FS2024. This has never been an issue for me on 2020 but I find that on some occasions (I think when the frame rate briefly gets very very low due to a random lag spike/loading a new area etc) that the LS output freezes and I think the game is hung - but the audio is still going and if i alt-tab I can see the game still going. Solution for me is to quit the scaling. But by then Im usually crashed into a building :(

Has anyone else seen this? I'm wondering if FS2024 handles windowing differently, or its related to the new windows changes mentioned in the last update?

RTX 3080, Ive got latest nvidia drivers. Im only using framegen not scaling.

Try running the game in windowed mode instead, use LS1/SGSR/FSR to upscale to fullscreen if needed.

Unfortunately I run an ultrawide monitor and windowing options dont offer smaller resolutions at the same aspect ratio, so I cant really do this and end up with it fuillscreen. Thanks for the advice tho!

Well, try it at least, after all you're looking for a solution! If it works then we can look into the aspect ratio thing.

I gave this a go by bypassing the scaling and it worked. I just went into full resolution windowed mode in FS2024 (which of course overlays the task bar blech) and then using LS to just enable frame gen - FS then gives a tidy fullscreen view at native res. It didnt seem to exhibit the weird disconnect (did a 90 min test and I would expect to see it show up by then) so I think keeping the game windowed is the solution.

I guess its either a bug/limitation in how LS is handling fullscreen apps or more likely something gone wrong in FS2024's end. Thanks again Gizzmoe.

Cool, you're welcome :)

A few weeks ago I found an old post that basically says that it's best to stay away from borderless whenever you can.

You can use LS with some fullscreen games that are DX12.
But keep in mind that the app is meant to be used with windowed (non-borderless) and due to bad borderless implementations, some games experience issues when using LS with fullscreen, fullscreen borderless, and windowed borderless. Some games experience FPS issues and strange visual problems when using the borderless options.
The recommended way is always windowed (non-borderless).

"the app is meant to be used with windowed (non-borderless)" sure isn't an official stance for whatever reason, the LS manual doesn't mention it and in the pinned guide the recommended setting is Borderless Fullscreen. It's good advice though, use window mode whenever you can.

Looks like I celebrated too early as I had a few more of these freezes tonight with windowed mode. I'll post back if I figure out a common thread.

Check for memory/VRAM leaks with RTSS.
I have the exact same issue, unfortunately it seems to be largely unnoticed. On the discord also +10 people having the same issue.

You can be 100% sure that the dev knows that some users experience those problems. But, to quote the dev: "There are too many factors at play within the OS and drivers that developers have no control over". A tiny minority of the LS users experiences such problems, so it's pretty likely that it has nothing to do with LS, but some other OS/driver/whatever-sh1t. Just because there is a problem in conjunction with LS doesn't mean that LS is the cause of the problem.

Havent played enough to say this is 100% it but I think it might be VRAM. I dialed back my settings (in MSFS Texture Resolution is the biggie) to leave a bit more more headroom in my VRAM and it hasnt failed yet. Played a couple hours with it, in Fullscreen even.

I think that may be why it didnt happen in FS2020, I used DX11 there and it was more efficient with the VRAM than its DX12 mode. No longer an option in 2024, we are forced into DX12 so like for like its a bit heavier.

What's your textures setting now? Medium or High?

Btw, if you have RTSS and you wanna see how much VRAM a game actually uses, then go to the Afterburner settings>Monitoring, click the "..." button in the "Active hardware monitoring graphs" section, enable GPU.dll and then enable "GPU dedicated memory usage \ process" monitoring.

I've dropped to Medium textures for now on my 10GB RTX3080

I've been having the same issues with MSFS (2020) lately, didn't seem to happen on previous version. On the odd occasion get a 'hung' screen, literally nothing I can do other than restart the computer to fix it, including trying super alt f4, etc. Everything works 'behind' the stuck frame, but I can't get it to disappear no matter what I do. Annoying for it to happen mid flight etc. If there was at least a way to kill that stuck frame and restart it that would be a nice work around but needing to restart the whole computer is incredibly frustrating.

Then you should try it with the previous version to make sure, you find it in the Steam Betas tab. Also check your VRAM usage, lower the texture setting if you don't have enough VRAM.
