Lossless Scaling

Lossless Scaling

Does it really work?
I've been trying to use it on Helldivers. Starting from a 60FPS base game, and LS tells me the game goes to 165FPS.
But I don't see it. I don't feel the difference. So I tried a different approach, and put the game at 30FPS, then start LS. LS FPS counter tells me the game is at 165FPS (the max my screen can do) but clearly it's not, it's really choppy.
My settings on LS are:
-Scaling type: LS1, performance off
-Frame generation: LSFG 2.3, Mode X2, performance on
-Capture API: DXGI

Am I missing something? Because the result isn't exactly visible. Even tho the FPS counter tells me I'm between 145 and 165 FPS.

If you are not scaling up anything you should turn the scaling option off.

It sounds like your system lacks MPO support; in the latest version of Win11, Microsoft altered how DXGI works and unless your system has MPO support it breaks LS's ability to detect whether a new frame's been rendered, basically making it think the game's rendering at your refresh rate no matter what the actual framerate is.
Try the WGC capture API option instead.

Tried both, it doesn't really change much. Also, I'm on win 10, does it change anything?

Oh, I see. In Win10, the DXGI option should properly lock onto the game's framerate regardless of MPO support.

Probably out of my depth, but a few questions I can ask: Do both numbers say 165, or just one of them? Which one, if so? And are you playing in fullscreen; as opposed to windowed mode or borderless fullscreen?

With WGC, it says 165. With DGXI it's locked at 120. But I don't really see it honestly.

For WGC that's expected; in Win10 it can only capture at the refresh rate of the display. It's pretty bad for frame generation as a result.
But for DXGI, hm, if that's after locking the game to 60 (and specifically, it says 60 on the left and 120 on the right), then it should be working as expected.

There have been driver issues with LS lately, you could try updating or downgrading (though if you're on Nvidia, I really wouldn't recommend downgrading below 566.03 for security reasons), though I'd probably suggest taking the advice of someone besides I at this point.

Actually, stupid question but one worth asking:

Have you checked your GPU utilization before and after framegen? You need GPU headroom for it to work properly (and keeping your GPU from maxing out is good advice in general even ignoring framegen and LS), and if your GPU is sitting in 90% and above you're not going to have a good time.

So I tested while still being in my ship, GPU utilization is around 9% with or without LS.
I also have a question. I'm playing in borderless window, and since I see different options in LS mentionning fullscreen, maybe that's a problem?
Thing is, as I said, the FPS counter tells me I'm at 120fps, but I don't really see the difference between LS activated or without it. From 60 to 120, it should be pretty visible, right?

...That doesn't sound right for something as recent as Helldivers 2 and 2x framegen to 120, but maybe I'm just underestimating modern GPUs.
That said, GPU utilization during intensive situations is what really matters. Your GPU might sit calm while you're just standing around in a calm enclosed environment, but I doubt that's what the whole game is.

I think I've heard about some people having issues with borderless windows, though AFAIK Lossless Scaling is only out-and-out incompatible with exclusive fullscreen.
You could try using a normal bordered window, but I personally doubt it'll make a difference.

What's weird is that LS has an effect on the game, when it scales, you see a "switch" effect, like a little frame jump. Idk, maybe my eyes suck and my brain is locked at 60fps.
