X3 Frame Gen?
If I'm struggling to hit a stable 60fps when using x2 frame gen in a game in which I really want to play on Max settings. Can I set frame cap to 40 and then use x3 frame gen to achieve 120fps?

What's the big con for using x3 and x4 frame gen? Is it just a ridiculous amount of input lag?

x3 and x4 don't have any notable increase on input delay, based on what I heard. Honestly if anything, they might actually be improvements compared to 2x since they have to show you the intermediate frames faster owing to the higher overall framerate.
Though that said, you might have latency from starting with 40 FPS rather than 60, but it's not really Lossless Scaling's fault.

Anyway, there's nothing stopping you from using frame gen from a lower base framerate; a lot of people even use 4x on 24 FPS content, it's just it may lead to image quality issues with the intermediate frames.
Give it a try, depending on the game or media it may not be so bad.

sub 60 fps and it will be choppy, if you can keep it at or above 60 use the setting that works for you :Grineer:

The amount of artifacts is kind of annoying though when using performance mode

40FPS base is really tough to deal with. Higher input lag and lower image quality compared to 60FPS. x3 and x4 are really useful to get from 60 to 180 and 240 from 60.

It depends on the game how useful x3 and x4 is with low input fps and on personal taste, I have a 165hz monitor and never use x2. I play Ultimate General with a 25fps cap x4 and it looks good. Also I'm happy with 30x4 in MSFS. and CP2077 at 40x4. For third-person games like RDR2 or Witcher 3 I prefer 53x3.
