Lossless Scaling

Lossless Scaling

A working FreeSync?
Finally, I got an AMD GPU to test FreeSync (I tried to enable it on NVIDIA GPUs, but it doesn't seem to work fine).
After a few hours of testing, I'm pretty sure FreeSync works great with Lossless Scaling and does it without any additional tweaks like FPS limiting and other things.

Unfortunately, there is no FreeSync indicator on my monitor, nor is it in the driver. So to make sure I didn't feel like it, I asked another person to do a blind test for me where he turned FreeSync on and off in driver settings randomly, and I was just playing the game and trying to determine if it actually worked or not. I guessed 8/9 times, and once when I got it wrong, I was very insecure.

Can anyone confirm my observations?

FreeSync works normally but i need some driver tweaks to optimum performance

Changes on Radeon driver - Add Lossless on game profile and;

Low Latency mode(Anti-Lag) = ON
FreeSync = Forced ON (Not AMD optimized)
Vsync = Always OFF

I like to work with driver and lossless for sharpness so in general i set 20~30% sharpness via radeon driver

That way 90% of the games runs pretty smoothly (some games need vsync on via game)

IIRC SpecialK https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Special_K has an option to show monitor refresh rate onscreen or something similar. With Freesync on, refresh rate should vary by FPS, so maybe you can give that a try? Can't remember if RTSS has onscreen refresh rate if SpecialK turns out to not have one.

Nvidia Profile Inspector let's you enable the global Gsync indicator

if you have an fps indicator, then it'll multiple 2/3 times compared to your actual frame rate. That'll indicate that freesync will work or not

also you could try downloading G-sync pendelum test, and if you click on the G-sync option it'll enable, or it will go back to either v-sync/ no V-sync option if it's not working. That will help to an extent, as of now it's not rlly working for me since i have 2 monitors, one that is g-sync compatible and the other is supposdley freesync compatible display.

I tried this on Final Fantasy 7 Remake, AC Valhalla, and Monster Hunter World.

My Spec
Ryzen 5 2600
RX 570 4GB
2x8GB DDR4
240GB SSD
Monitor LG 22MP68VQ (Freesynch range 40-75)

The result from those three games is the same.

Every time I use the Lossless Scaling on them, the game becomes choppy (The FPS is stable in 60FPS but feels like 24-30FPS)
The only thing to fix this issue is by making the game run at 70FPS or more.

To up it simple
70FPS or more = Smooth gameplay
69FPS or less = Choppy gameplay

The issue only occurs when I turn on the Freesync on my monitor and the driver.
If I turn it off on both, the game becomes smooth (but not as smooth as freesync activated)

I don't use MSI Afterburner while testing it.

I don't see any difference on or off, except of course for tearing vanishes when freesync is on. Does it work, well then yes.

There seems to be some confusion with the settings over 'AMD optimised' and 'on' where AMD optimised does or does not remove tearing depending on time of day and what colour the pig I am holding is, while standing on one leg and playing dixie on a tin whislte. I think this is not related directly to LS, probably only highlighted when using LS? That setting is a bit too random and seems to play up, though to maybe a slightly lesser degree, without LS.

This setting is in the game profile settings not in the main 'Display' settings. Ill keep playing with it but 'On' seems to work reliably and 'AMD Optimized' appears to toss a coin.

Games tested
New World, Serious Sam 3,4, Wolfenstein: New Order, F1 2000, Portal2, Banished, The Talos Principle, Doom Eternal,, etc not found any that don't work with LS and freesync enabled.

I can't get this to work with FreeSync for the life of me. Runs perfectly fine on my 2160p 60Hz TV, runs like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on my 1440p144Hz FreeSync PC monitor, even with Vsync and a 60fps cap enabled. Not a big deal since I was going to use the software for couch gaming anyways, but I'd still like to have it up and running on my primary setup!

if you have Enhanced Sync enabled then disable it.

I believe that's an AMD setting, right? I have a NVIDIA GPU, do you happen to know if there's an equivalent?

I think there is , like Fast Sync or something similar.

Nvidia control panel, 3d settings -> vertical sync, select Off, if it is already off then Im out of ideas, not enough information to go on.

Might try to lower the refresh on the 1440p to 120Hz, that would be similar GPU usage to the 2160 @60Hz err, wait, maths is broken no still more GPU than the 2160@60Hz,, just lower it to 60Hz to start with and check plays as smooth as the 2160@60Hz , lower the actual refresh rate using desktop display settings

Thanks for your suggestions, tinkering with driver settings effectively reduced this weird stutter issue in some games! TW3 was still a stuttery mess, but then I figured out that I needed to cap its framerate directly through RTSS instead of the ingame settings. Now it works flawlessly. Great!

I generally enable Vsync, then lower the refresh rate of the monitor from windows display settings to something the GPU can handle, I find capping the frame rate in game or using frame rate limiter usually causes lag and rubber banding etc, while lowering the actual refresh rate and Vsync , with freesync gives me a very smooth frame rate capped by vsync to the refresh rate. however your hardware is different and you seem to have got what your looking for so whatever works best for you.
