Possible Fix for "Game must be launched by Steam" Issue
I have been struggling with this game for the past couple of weeks, always getting the error that my game must be launched through Steam. While adding mods to GTAIV: EFLC, a repeated crash was fixed by closing MSI Afterburner and any other programs like EVGA Precision that capture gameplay or monitor your computer and games. I tried out TDU2 again and right after getting the error I closed MSI Afterburner and relaunched the game and sure enough it worked fine. Use this if nothing else seems to work. May have been a coincidence but worked for me.

thx for trying Shaw. actual fix for steam error #5 =

1. Go to the game directory.

2. Delete the file name "UpLauncher.localdb" (not the same as "UpLauncher.exe")

3. Run TestDrive2.exe [not uplauncher.exe] and click "OK" when the error comes up.

4. Now run UpLauncher.exe....

For Steam Users:

5. You may get the Error 5 again; "close the steam and then right click on steam and work administrator". Run the game through Steam again, and it should work."

6. Post results.

I've been following all your possible fixes for the problem for the last few weeks actually and you've ben a big help lol. I had just about given up all hope though after trying things like what you listed above and this turned out to be all I needed to do.

Ellie (And Shaw) may the great old ones smile on you.
I've finally got it working !!!!

OK still an issue with the multiplayer (NAT & password issues) but since I'm 99.9% interested in the offline game this is great.

Thanks again.

Port forwarding fixed all my problems with NAT type, there are other guides on how to do that around the discussion section. Since I'm back at school now, my NAT type is always moderate and online works fine for me while on that setting. By password issues I'm assuming you are talking about Atari/TDU2 accounts which I don't really have any info on, but I'm sure Ellie knows something. Thanks for posting your results.

Ok, I've officially figured out why the game kept crashing during the first loading screen. It's because the game conflicts with RivaTuner Statistics Server (if you have a GeForce video card, you might also have that installed). Solution is to either uninstall it or add the game to the list and set the Application Detection Level to "None" and the game should run fine. Now if you were having problems with Steam launch, the solution I mentioned also fixes that as well.
